Another new MI pilot

Just got my Mavic Pro Sunday night. Took a few flights yesterday. By the third short flight in the afternoon I took it off beginner mode to go up. I was 200 ft up and 400 ft out when I started to get a tad nervous. lol I'm a big photography hobbyist who just wanted to get above the houses for some shots. This thing is positively awesome. Kind of bummed the next few days look not so great due to winds and precipitation. I'm not sure how bad winds are to fly in, but I'm not going to learn this week.

Here are a couple quick shots from last night on all default settings. I was trying to tilt the camera up but didn't see until last night that you have to turn that on. I also set it to shoot RAW+JPEG so I can do a little more with the files. I was a little bummed that you have to stop shooting video to shoot a still, but not uncommon.

Hi Randy. Welcome! Nice pics. It's fun, isn't it?

The Mavic handles wind very well. Just remember when you decide to venture further out (and you know you will), try to fly away from you with a headwind so the tailwind will help it get back. Wind direction may be different aloft so your airspeed will be the indicator of wind direction. Fast going away means slow coming back. The battery estimator does not account for wind speed.

You can grab a still from a video via software. A screen capture of a paused video may work, depending on the intended use.

Mossiback - I tried taking it up in the parking lot for a coworker. Will certainly take some getting used to. I wasn't comfortable after my few minutes of flight time so I just landed it. We have gusts in the 20's and they quickly go to 30s plus as you go up. I got an app on iOS called UAV Forecast. Any others recommended?

I do not use a forecast app because all the hills and trees here in Seattle creates micro-climates; meaning it may be calm in one area but a mile away may be gusty. Also the winds aloft can be different than closer to the ground, both in speed and direction. I recommend setting it in Tripod mode and keeping it within 20 feet of the ground until you get the feel of the sticks. The pucker factor will diminish with experience.

The weather app Storm has an "hourly" weather section that forecasts out three days, and it shows the wind each hour. Because I'm a private pilot, I have several apps I use, but most are not intuitive for non-pilots. Storm is easy though its just a general weather app, not for anything specific.
