How do you connect them with an android tablet. Currently my Samsung tablet is connected to the controller via a mini to USB connector. Do you simply connect them to the mini port on the RC and leave everything else as is ?

You can buy a hdmi to usb c type connector, which goes into charging port of your phone, depends on phone model, as to which type of usb fitting, but they are available on ebay, i bought a hdmi to usb type c adaptor lead for my galaxy note 8..cost me about £5.45 uk..works brilliantly,

Gotta agree, the nvidia shield k1 rocks, bought a 2nd hand one, in mint condition with case etc; for £116.00..beats using my 850 quid smartphone all time, at least it wouldnt hurt so much if i drop it..!!
