Do the Mavic Air batteries (or I guess any of these DJI "smart" batteries) need to be put in storage mode? Which if I remember was about 20-30% capacity. And if so, how do you do it? I've seen the battery adapter that lets you use the battery as a power bank but is there a way to tell when the battery is at 20-30%? I guess the best way is to hack the DJI battery charger to connect to a standard lipo charging station which has storage settings but that's a bit involved.

No. When not using them, they will live a longer life if you store them between about a 40% to 60% charge level.

The batteries will auto discharge down to the storage level on their own. If you don't make a habit of fully charging them and not using them, then you won't have to ever manually discharge them.
