Bird and remote firmware different

Can anyone explain clearly the following:

Does the bird and remote firmware always have to be the same?
I got a new mavic and the bird has .0400, remote .550.
Did not upgrade for obvious reasons and all works. No warnings on FW incompatible.
I could not find any documentation on which bird fw is compatible with remote fw.

No.

If all works, then you're good to go. I'm not aware of any AC/RC firmware versions that are not compatible with one another.
