Bird Attacks in the UK

one of my first flights over a moat towards a castle resulted in a squadron of swallows deciding that it would be fun to buzz a newbie. Theres no way you will out run these sky torpedo's, thankfully i survived. got them on video, realised how close they really got.

Geese, in South Africa. Dropped to just above the ground in Sport Mode and got away. They are not nearly as agile as a drone.

I had a bald eagle take a run at my P4P. I did the wrong thing and turned and ran, heading towards home while going down. I did snap a quick photo as he came into view. The P4P had a bit of a lazy gimbal, hence the angle. The eagle pursued me almost to ground level and almost caught it. As someone pointed out at the time, likely better to get into the Sport mode and go straight up. These large birds can dive much faster than they can gain altitude. I have also had a peregrine falcon make a few aggressive passes at my MA 2. I suspect that they are protecting nesting areas or defending their territory.View attachment 131068
That’s one unhappy eagle!

Yes, As you say during mating season is worse. Fly high at speed upwards and away until they relax then bring home away from the area if possible.

Some nice bird shots though but best to stay clear.

Swallows & Martins seem to love it when I fly my drone. One location I regularly fly at has over 60 pairs at the height of the season. I have noticed that every time I fly they follow the drone, at times getting close but not close enough to attack. I do wonder if it helps them catch the insects they are after somehow?

I've had loads of birds come quite close to the drone but so far none have come dangerously close. I find that swallows tend to follow for a while without really getting too close. If I'm aware of a lot of birds in the area I'm always ready to go into sports mode and go straight up then get out of there. Whether I'd be so calm if an attack came suddenly I hope I never find out.

I've had two close encounters with swallows during nesting season -- just fly-bys that the camera recorded. I wasn't aware of them until I downloaded the video. Perhaps there have been others that the cameras didn't catch.

Very true!

First couple of times I landed the drone, but as I do regular flights for the estate I’ve started to fly regardless. They never get too close but definitely follow its flight path.

Also have a pair of Buzzards in the area that seem to have got used to the drone and now seem to take very little notice.

Surprised nobody commented yet from Australia, their massive wedge-tailed eagles are notorious for clearing the skies of commercial drones causing tens of thousands of dollars damage:

I've always heard that but yesterday I found out it doesn't work with nesting starlings...they chased me regardless of what I did.

Those are swallows, not starlings.

Seagulls will chase you forever!
I flew backwards to capture this guy.
He followed me for over a quarter mile.
Not sure if he was courting me or shooing me away! LOL!
It was shot with the P4P that looks a little like a seagull.
