Is it ok to fly around a naval ship heading upriver on a courtesy call , staying back 30m as required , or would it have its own no fly zone around it ?

Ask the sailors about Russians that buzz them.

From a general point of view that it seems like a silly thing to do - 30m is really close to anything, let alone a ship - I seriously doubt the men on board will appreciate your attempts to harass them.

And then there are the rules:

These new restrictions specifically prohibit drone flights in this airspace within a stand-off distance of 3,000 feet laterally and 1,000 feet above any U.S. Navy vessel.

I wouldn't and certainly no where near 30m. What Navy? What river?

Yeah - the post claims Ireland: for that, US regs probably don't apply. But if an Irish ship came up river stateside, I'd still honor the request to stay well clear. 3000' is essentially well beyond VFR range, even for my old 20-05 eyesight.

In your part of the world it's probably fine.

Mazdaman323lx, I wouldn't count on that. From what I've seen, the EU regulations on drone operations are more strict than those in the U.S. and flying close to naval vessels is definitely prohibited here. (I see now that you're in Ireland.)

Just as a matter of interest what are the rules concerning flying near an army camp, Garda station or prison?
Even if the rules say 30m I still wouldn't do it ......unless you ask permission.
I am still curious to know which river?

Why spout FAA regulations to a person in Ireland? If you have to comment, at least research the regulations for their area so you speak from an informed position.

I replied with FAA/US rules because the OP's question was regarding a naval vessel and I sort of knew the answer from manned flying days. The OP didn't ask for any specific navy, or any specific authority. Had the OP asked specifically about Irish vessels, I would not have even responded.

I was hired to film a dock works that had two naval ships docked. The navy knew I was there but after discussions, i declined the project after the captains of both ships explained that if I wondered to close out of specified parameters, their boys would by happy to target practice on my drone! And they were serious!

A naval ship in what location Mazdaman323lx? I’m not familiar with the drone rules in Cork, Ireland, but it’s a definite no no here in the US! But I suspect it’s probably a dumb-dumb rule anywhere in the world!

I'm familiar with ales and whisky in Cork and Mitchelstown. When I was there I did not see military anything except for me, just the police, and they did not give me a second look as I was not committing crimes, odd how that works. LOL The pub goers in Mitchelstown were very curious about my Ford truck (American).
