Camera view confusion

Just tried to use my iphone 7XR with my mavic air 2. When in photo mode screen view is square with
black on each side. When in video mode the view is nice and wide and fills the whole screen.
Is this normal?

Yes. Videos and stills have different aspect ratios. Check out the still photo options available with the app.
