I was feeling a little spirited and thought I would try to fly between the steel girders of a bridge and get some good shots from inside the bridge. I thought it would be safer if I switched to tripod mode and move around very slowly. Very bad idea. As expected, I lost compass and with that it was drifting all over the place. Tripod mode wasn't allowing me to move fast enough to overcome some of the drift. I was too scared to take my thumbs off the sticks and try to cancel tripod mode (sticks were hard over). Needless to say I had some close calls to some beams and I didn't even get any good shots out of the ordeal. Anyway, I got very lucky to make it back out without crashing. I never knew how important those compasses are to maintain position (I might have lost some GPS satellites as well though-no warnings).

Anyway, word of advice, stay away from bridges!!!

Thanks for the heads up, I never thought about all that metal interfering with the compass and blocking satellite reception.

All the metal isn't all you have to deal with when flying around bridges. You may not notice any wind, but there are significant updrafts and thermals under bridges. I found that out first hand as well.
