I just bought the Mavis 2 Pro my first ever drone I wanted to know do I have to have a device that has cellular service in order for the GPS to work well with the rc or, can I get a device (phone) and plug it up to the rc just like that and it will be fine with no service.

Hi - Welcome to the Forum ... Is that a Mavic called 'Mavis' ...
You can plug a phone into the RC controller with no mobile data service.
It's the Mavic that has the GPS receivers that position it in flight.
The only thing you have problems with then is updating firmware (but connection of the phone to WiFi sorts that), and the Map function doesn't give you real-time info when flying (see YouTube videos about using maps offline).

You'll only need a mobile device with a GPS receiver if you want to use the Follow Me flight mode or be able to manually reset the home point to your current location after taking off. All other GPS related functions use data from the Mavic's internal GPS receiver.

My drone is officially called Little Nellie, after my granddaughter, but also after the name of the “portable” aerocopter that was used first in the 1967 James Bond movie, “ You Only Live Twice”. It was actually built and flown by a former British officer and he did all the flying stunts in it for the filming
