Is there anyway to turn this off to preserve battery? All the settings you would need to see are on your phone or tablet?

No. Power use is negligible anyway.
You'll be happy for that screen the day the app crashes on you or your phone is out of battery.

Also pro tip, switch the app to full screen mode so you have an uncluttered video feed, and look at the remote's screen for the data.

How do you switch to full screen? I see references to it in the app but haven't found the actual function.
I wouldn't want all data off the screen, only stuff not shown on the controller.

Slide upwards with either one or 2 fingers depending on what's set in app settings (one by default).
You've got no choice though, it's either everything or nothing.
