When recording video in "normal" mode on the Mavic 3 Pro we have to stop recording to switch cameras, from the 1x to 3x to 7x for example. But if I change the mode to "explore" I can freely zoom from 1x to 3x to 7x and into digital zoom without stopping recording. Is there any disadvantage to being in explore mode other than the jerky transition from one camera to the other? Is there any reason not to be in "explore" mode all the time?

The main reason to not use explorer mode it is that it is capped at 30FPS. The FPS you select on the record properties is the FPS you'll be flying, so to fly around you want to use normal mode and set the camera at 4K/60. Some drones like the Avata can even transmit 120FPS with the Goggles V2, and that is want you want to use to fly. You only switch to 30 FPS or whatever when you are explicitly recording with a final purpose in mind, but to fly around, you set the max FPS that can transmit your drone/controller, which in the case of the M3 is 1080p/60FPS.

You can set it to 4K/60FPS and still get 60FPS transmission because it will automatically downscale it to 1080p for the video feed.

Other problems of the explorer mode are that it doesn't admit advanced video or photo formats or camera settings.

On normal mode you can set a button to jump from the 24mm to the telephoto, and it's usually better than zooming all the way around unless you want an uncut video for whatever reason.
