Does turning off WiFi on your phone make a difference in range and interference?

Good question.

I'm a newbie and have been putting my phone into Airplane Mode (no pun intended) when I fly after I had a number of instances of the RC disconnecting from my phone in mid flight. I have had the problem only once since, so unsure how much (or if) it helps.

No idea.
But I do know putting your phone in airplane mode eliminates a mid flight phone call, text message, or any other interruption that could 1)distract you; or 2)cause an app to crash

I have read that it is helpful to zoom out on your map in DJI Fly to cache it on your phone before placing the mobile in Aeroplane Mode and turning off wifi and Bluetooth, to avoid interruptions during flight. Not sure if it is of benefit but this procedure has done me no harm with my Air 2. ??
