Firefighters continue monitoring brush fire sparked by downed Army drone

A small brush fire was seen with smoke rising from the crash site.

There’s already been a few wildfires reported in Oregon and Arizona started by private drones, mostly homebuilt FPV racers that crashed in grass and shrubland and started a fire due to overheating batteries. Their owners had to pay the fire suppression costs too, which in some cases was well over $100k. Another good reason to have liability insurance, even as a recreational flyer.

In one of the first large military drone crashes in Hawaii, an Army RQ-7B Shadow aircraft out of Wheeler Army Airfield went down in the mountains behind the base Wednesday afternoon, causing a brush fire, the 25th Infantry Division said.
