Imagine what it would be like flying your drone on Mt. Everest! Starting Tuesday National Geographic will be airing a new documentary called "Lost On Everest".
The documentary features drone video taken high on Everest. They started at 23,000 feet and flew to the top at 28,000 feet. That had to be a huge challenge. I can't imagine trying that in that kind of environment. The documentary is about trying to find climbers who might have reached the summit before the Hilliary expedition 30 year before, but died on the mountain.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the heads up. I'll def be watching. Back in the early 90s when I was doing a lot of backpacking and started getting into some light mountaineering I was very interested in the subject. Read everything I could find on the history of the sport. The Book "First on Everest: The mystery of Mallory and Irvine" was a favorite read. When they discovered George Mallorys body in 1999 it was amazing, but didn't really solve the mystery. Everest has some secrets I don't think she'll ever give up. But it will be amazing to see drone footage shot up there. High hopes for this documentary.

very cool, had to look it up so posting this for others.

On June 30th, National Geographic continues a longstanding tradition of exploring the forbidden mountain, Mount Everest, with two special programs. The first is a feature-length documentary called Lost on Everest at 9:00 pm ET that attempts to solve one of the mountain’s biggest mysteries. National Geographic’s history with Everest goes back to 1933 when they brought the world the first images of the mountain from the air and in 1966 when they funded the first team of American explorers to reach the highest peak and gave the world the first footage from the summit.

Sweet. Thanks for the heads up. For whatever reason I’m glued to the tv when just about anything Everest is on.

Of course I started a thread on this yesterday. Now this duplicate thread!!! This month's issue of National Geographic Magazine came yesterday and I found this wonderful map of the river systems of Asia on one side and the drone panorama of Everest on the other side. I wrote in the Forum post of my 17 day trek to the base of Everest at age 62 in the year 2000. The drone pilot in the Everest article had to fly from a higher camp, and had only 15 minutes to gather the 26 images to create the amazing panorama. Please refer to the full discussion the forum yesterday.

So my thread, discussed above, is in TODAY's Mavic Pilot Forum. Just scroll towards the bottom of the list for today's forum.

When I was younger I always had an urge to want to climb Everest. That was then, but now the thought of just going to base camp intrigues me. I applaud you for doing it at 62 years of age.

Dear Rocky Mountain High

Firstly, you are already acclimatized (Estes Park)! Secondly, at age 57 your are in better shape than I was at 62.I suffer from COPD from chronic bronchitis, but managed to do it anyway. I trained on a stair master for 30 minutes daily for 6 months. Still the shortness of breath in a hypoxic environment is tough. There were tons of people on the trail all the way up. Most people can do it. I would recommend NOT going to Everest Base Camp at 17,500 feet but go to Kalla Pattar which is 1000 feet higher but it gives you a much better view and better picture of the mountain. You simply cannot see the top of Everest from Base Camp, because you are so close to it. Mostly, we camped but there are some lodges along the way too (very simple and crude). Meals are simple- dried grains, dehydrated drinks, lentils, etc. You can rent warm coat and sleeping bags there. The outfitter brings the gear (tents, cookware, etc. ).

Second recommendation is that a there is no need to spend a lot of money. There are tons of outfitters in Kathmandu, and we actually hired a company who put us with 15 people (dishwashers, porters, sherpas, people to run ahead and make camp, cooks). It was very reasonable and we had our own private trek which was simply my son in law and me. Our tema dwindled from 15 to less than 5 by the end as we used up the food. It was 17 total days on the trail from Lukla at 9000 feet for the start off point (fly to Luka to shorten the trek). I even hired a person to be my camera bearer (like a gun bearer) for $100 for the full 17 days!.

Please check out the post in today's forum for some pictures from that trip. Would be happy to discuss off forum line.

Thanks for letting us know. Just set my DVR to record this. Very cool.

If you look at the time, I started this thread was started at 1:15 yesterday after seeing the advert on the Discovery Channel and decided to let the flyers know about it. This is not a duplicate thread as you stated!

Fine- if the thread can be combined, it would be better for all.

No problem with that. I just didn't like being accused of copying your post. All I was trying to do was to let the members know about the show. Peace out.

By all means, do not stress about this. Merely pointing out that there were two similar posts of the same subject and trying to combine them for convenience of us all. No accusing of any sort. Could care less. It's really a friendly forum and a big world of droners out there.

I can’t wait to see the show. I used to want to climb Everest. Then one of my relatives did, and wrote about, and based on his experience I have no desire to try. Just getting to the mountain is life threatening. Parasites, tropical diseases, dangerous roads and transportation. I’ll live vicariously through others thank you.

No...not really. The flight from USA to Kathmandu is long but we stayed 2 days to recoup from jet lag in a wonderful Kathmandu hotel and shopped in the Thamel district for trekking clothes, tents, etc. The flight to Lukla was white knuckles. Landed at 9,000 feet runway going uphill to a berm at the runway's end. Started hike at 9,000 feet and was on trail every day from 8 AM to 4 PM. Stops for lunch and rest. Camp by 5 and dinner at 6 and dark by 7. Slept until 4 AM (then up o breakfast and started hiking again. Climbed to Namchee Bazaar 15,000feet, and then Tengboche Bhuddist temple at 16,000 feet. On day of Everest, up by 4 AM, hiking in dark and snow with headlights. Got to summit of Kala Pattar by noon. An hour for photography, then 8 days of hiking back to Lukla Airport. The mountains gradually appear and get amazingly gorgeous day by day. Lots of trekkers on the trail, as well as yaks. Sorry, no parasites, tropical diseases, etc. but risks of HAPE (high altitude pulmonary edema), and Altitude sickness for which you must immediately descend.
