A fleet of drones are set to shuttle patient pathology samples across Moreton Bay to testing labs outside of Brisbane in an Australian first that is hoped to reduce test result wait times for blood samples and COVID-19 swabs.

Now THIS is where drone deliveries have a future, well not so much a future as a RIGHT NOW.
Urgent medical supplies, blood, pathology samples, etc.
Zipline have been developing it for years, and on a tangent (probably for the $ funding) it's doing the Walmart trials in the US I believe.

But fanciful delivery of general smaller consumer items, groceries, etc, is a long way off, and when that comes in it will then be a test for autonomous aerial passenger vehicles in later progression.

10 years, 15 years ?
It will be amazing what's been developed (if we don't have an epic war in the meantime).

I remember 6 terrible months spent as a pathology courier, stuck in city traffic all day, with impossible schedules and pressure from management.
It would have been a lot more enjoyable to pilot drones.

Something just occurred to me, what are the chances of a bird strike bring down a drone carrying an infectious disease sample? How well are these samples protected?

Probably no worse than a traffic accident happening to a vehicle courier.
