Just had the first flight with the Mavic after the latest update. Has anyone got any comments on the stability whilst hovering. I noticed that there seemed to be just as much sideways movement as before when the upgrade was supposed to make it better.....

In my case, same as before. Not that I had to complain about "before"!
Did a short Sport Mode flight, then two 3D mappings with Pix4D. All worked as it should.

I too have the same issue. I upgraded the firmware, re calibrated the sensors and after taking off whilst hovering the Mavic is just moving up and down left and right.
on .500 it was rock still.
I have been reading that .400 is the best firmware still. Never flew on that version so not sure?
Should I roll back to 400. seems 550 has issues?

I also have another issue.
I was trying to take a shot at night. and it was set to autofocus. I got one good shot. then I wanted to experiment with the iso settings and shutter speeds to take multiple shots and see differences. After I switched to Manual Focus, no matter what I did I couldn't get it to go back into focus. Even If I switched back to auto it wasn't focusing.
Seems like there is an issue with the new firmware and the app settings/focus control ? I'm not sure.
Eager to see what others have to say.
Cheers

I have seen no benefit to updating to .500 or .550.
When DJI talks about more precise RTH and more precise hovering it feels like they are playing games with me. Both of these things have worked extreamly well from the first version onward. I really don't know how they could make them work any better but the power of suggestion has always been a powerful tool. Anyway the things that I know are tangable reality is that .400 has a lot less NFZ code in it and aborting a landing can be done the natural way by just pushing up on the stick. I hate the new sports mode abort system in .500

Can you tell me about the sports mode abort system? I don't recall reading about it.

Sure. When the Mavic is near to the ground and you hold down the elevator more than 3 seconds it assumes you want to land, so it starts a landing procedure. To abort that you use to be able to push up on the Elevator and the craft would rise. With .0500 onward that does not work. You have to switch it to sport mode and then push up on the stick.

The big problem is that the Mavic can be fooled when flying over water. At lower altitudes like 40ft up if you hold down the sticks the Mavics VPS sensors can get fooled by the water and think that it is only a few inches or so off the ground so it starts to initiate a landing procedure. Most of the time the pilot is intentionally trying to get lower to the water say 15ft off it, so he keeps holding down the stick and when he releases it he is shocked to find that the Mavic is still descending on its own. The natural reaction is to push up on the stick but in .0500 onward that does not work. Most people do not remember the sports mode override until it's too late and they have hit the water and lost the Mavic.

This one was posted yesterday. Seems like one happens every week.

Water Crash... Is this the VPS issue im now reading about?

There are no real improvements. The only feature of any interest is audio recording. You could already do that with your phones built in audio recorder app and then add the file to the video in post if you needed it. I don't know what DJI is up to but the Chinese forums have occasionaly mentioned the NFZ stuff as now making flying very difficult and some kind of new personal ID authentication system to verify the owner of the drone before it can be flown anywhere.
I think their firmware is ahead of ours by a version or two. I am not sure if it's beta or not but we have not yet seen the App that goes with .550 so that will be interesting.

My thoughts exactly . Mine was perfect right out of the box and I would be a happy camper if it always flew as well and the app was always that stable .

The power of suggestion works both ways also . I'm sure a DJI tech at some point has seen an issue reported on these forums that may have not been an issue at all and had the idea " Oh yeah , I can fix that ! "
