Hey everyone, I’m puzzled on this one. I have an app that gives me the conditions at the current time. Any suggestions on why it would be telling me that it isn’t good to fly?

I see blue skies and very few clouds and the wind is hardly blowing. I’m puzzled why it’s telling me this.

Two Possible reasons: App shows overcast sky (100% cloud cover) - This is most likely the reason given the color coding. And wind showing 6 mph gust - would be total of 12 mph wind.

My guess the app is using a nearby reporting location, an airport or other weather service. Conditions at your location are apparently different.

Thanks for the reply. I mean it’s sunny and almost no wind. The wind comes and goes but it’s pleasant now. From what I’ve described, would you think it’s ok to fly?

Assuming you're in an area where it is legal to fly you should be ok. The mistake on the cloud cover is the cause for the no fly recommendation. This app is advisory use it along with your visual cues to make you decision. Don't forget to check wind speeds at higher altitudes as well.

Thanks so much! I think I should be fine to fly.

Are there any apps you recommend that might benefit?

Because it's a stupid app with stupid default settings.
Who ever heard of cloud cover making for bad flying?
And the KP Index is a myth.
You won't find anywhere on earth with insufficient GPS cover.

Some people believe it if it appears on a screen.
You'd do better to judge for yourself than rely on those apps.

Best regards and good luck,

Go into the app settings and change parameters , cloud cover could be a factor if you are at high altitude and clouds are low

This app is fine, but it is only one part of the picture. You can decide for yourself if the app's determination is correct. If the app says wind is calm and you go outside and the trees are bent over double in the wind you factor that into your decision. As the PIC you're responsible for making decision based on the info you have. Cloud cover may not be a factor if you plan to stay below that in any case.

I think I'm grounded in San Francisco today. Assuming I managed to fly at low altitude I'd be waving goodbye to my Air once it got to 100 feet or so. Screenshot_20190105_095151_com.uavforecast.jpegScreenshot_20190105_095143_com.uavforecast.jpeg

I’m not sure about the weather portion of the app but this is the first app I’ve come across that shows all the small airports as well as water based airports. For sure you need to review the defaults though.

Also do not use the sats locked value. This is just an estimate. Look on your RC or DJI go app for the actual number. How do you lock just part of a satellite?

As someone else alluded to, you can change the settings for what conditions give you a not good to fly warning. In the area I fly 100% cloud cover makes no difference so I went into settings and turned off any warning due to cloud cover. I use the app a lot and have found it useful.

I also have an app called LiveATC. It’s fun to listen to radio traffic between ATC and planes but if you set it to an airport nearby it gives much more accurate and current wind info. E.g. 07009G15KT. Translates to wind coming from 70 degrees on compass ( a little north of due east) at 9 knots gusting to 15 knots. There are also other aviation weather apps that will give you more detailed weather semi translated to English.

I have the same app. I have never had it say anything other than "NOT GOOD TO FLY" no matter what the conditions. Right now the temp here is 50f wind at ground level 2 MPH with gusts up to 6 MPH and at 500 ft winds are at 5MPH with gusts up to 13MPH and perfectly crystal blue skies and the app says "NOT GOOD TO FLY". I like the info the app gives on conditions so I just check the situation and make my own decision and ignore the apps suggestion on flying.

PS I WILL be flying today no matter what the app says because the conditions are perfect.:p:p
