Usually when I post something about birds and flying I’m talking about with one of my Drones. Not this time. I was on a walking trail and as I passed someone’s backyard which is lined with trees and bushes it happened without any warning whatsoever. Apparently the lead bird must have thought it was Top Gun in charge which he was as all these birds were committed to the same narrow path the lead bird chose to make. Of course the one day I didn’t take my neo with me (as I always do) to film in follow mode and this happens. I could have been on one of those you’re not going to believe this videos on youtube but alas it wasn’t to be. A very large pack of black birds maybe 20 or more (at least} came hauling *** from high to low up and over a gate with bushes and trees on both sides so access was very narrow and visibility was very limited not only for the birds but for me as well. I had zero warning as this happened. As our paths met with them coming at me like a freight train at a 90 degree angle the only thing that kept me from being injured was my reflexes from the shock, but even then about all I could do was turn my face and leaned back as I twisted my body to avoid the collision. It felt like an explosion as they roared past me. I stared yelling at the top of my lungs with hooting and hollering with the full knowledge of what just occurred and just how close I came to being injured. Can you imagine the damage I almost experienced with this. They were all at my face level because of the path they chose to take over this gate at breakneck speed. I’ve had many encounters with birds and my flying as far back as the 80’s but nothing even comes close to this event, OMG. This was quite the experience and one I hope never gets repeated.

Certainly startling, like walking up a covey of quail unexpectedly. As everyone's mother might say, "They could have poked your eye out." Other than that, the impact damage from a 100-gram feather-covered object shouldn't be bad.

Eye or ear was exactly what worried me. "Gosh Doc, Gee I just don’t know how that bird got lodged in my ear". These were not sparrows and I would’ve gotten hurt I’m telling ya. The beaks as pointed and long in that flying position traveling at that speed would be like a lawn-darst and right at that crossing point for me and the birds. I wish the neo would have been my walking buddy like it always is. I’m not exaggerating. These were large birds and there was a ******** of them. Not flying off the ground trying to gain altitude, not just crossing a backyard, they were traveling at a very very high rate of speed as if they dropped from a much higher altitude. I’m all about flying and watching birds and how they fly and move. Way more than any normal person. Been that way since I was in my early 20’s. Instead of having my nose in a phone as I cross a parking lot my problem is always looking up.
As you can see there’s not much wiggle room with this opening above the gate. I was walking at a normal gait and just passed the tree that you see on the right side with the green leaves. They arrived in mass at the very same time as me where we all crossed. I was not several feet back but right there at that point. They were committed to their flight path.n.jpeg
