Geofencing Question

I vaguely understand the concept of geofencing; and how it prevents motor activation in certain restricted zones. My question is what happens if your flight originates in a non-restricted zone; but, during flight, you inadvertently wander into a restricted zone? Does geofencing activate a RTH, give a warning with time to leave the restricted area, initiate an immediate landing, or does it just shut the motors down resulting in a crash and possibly a lost drone?

If you have GPS, the drone is aware of where it is and is unable to inadvertently wander into a restricted zone.
If you tried, it's like bumping into a soft invisible wall.
You can fly up, down and along it, but you cannot fly through it.
