I’m an old guy with an old drone but am new to flying. I recently picked up an old DJI Mavic Mini and am having a great time with aerial photography and videography. It’s nice addition to my dabbling with amateur photography.

I’ll be moving from Ottawa to Alberta in the fall and am considering treating myself to a new drone - maybe a Mini 5 Pro or Air 4 (if they get released this year).

Welcome from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, USA. We have a Member's Map in the Upper Right of the Title Bar. Click on "Members" and then Click on "Member's Map…" Check it out and you might find some new flying friends.

I hate you!!! Both of those drones, the Mini 4 Pro and/or 5 Pro are not and may not ever be available here again in the US… L 😂 L . . .

Since you live in Canada, there are specific laws and rules for you to follow, please check to ensure these are current.

Even if you have flown Drones before, here is some Good Old Fashion Advice…

You paid a lot of money for that Drone, put your phone number on it. If your drone gets lost or stuck in a tree and it finally comes down when you are not around, give the finders an opportunity to contact you so it can be returned.

Now, for the Fun Part, But do not let the excitement of the moment get the best of you. When you are going out to fly, do it slowly and deliberately. Get used to a set procedure and even practice it.

There are so many things I could write but these are the highlights that I feel need mentioning.

Plug in your phone/tablet into your controller; turn on the Controller and DJI Fly App (if it does not start on its own…). On the Drone, open the front legs, then open the back legs, and then remove the Gimbal Cover.

The Gimbal is the most delicate item on the Drone and banging or bumping can damage it. I also fastened a short "Remove Before Flight" ribbon to the cover so it's more noticeable and I do not forget to remove it…

Turn on the drone and watch it come to "life." Watching the Gimbal go through its self-check is almost like watching a puppy or kitten opening its eyes for the first time…

Place the drone down (preferably on a Landing Pad) while it finishes its self-test (collecting satellites, etc…).

Check your battery status (Phone, Drone, and Controller), check the Signal Strength, by now the Controller should have reported it updated the Home Point.

Lift off, 6 feet (2-meters) or so, hover a bit, check the controls (move the drone a bit forward, back, left, right, yaw left and right). By now, your Controller will probably report again, "Home point Updated."

If you go out in a rush and race thru your start up and take off before the drone has finished it prep, it may update its Home Point over that pond or that old tree you are flying over and in your excitement, you'll fly the drone long past it Low Battery point and when it engages Return to Home and lands in the pond or in a tree; it will be all on you…

Now go have fun, learn to fly the drone by sight before you try to fly it out a distance depending on the video feed, FPV.

I would also advise you to use YouTube and watch a lot of the Videos on flying and setting up the Drone. When it is too dark, too cold, or too wet, you can "fly it vicariously" through YouTube. Also watch some of the Blooper Drone Videos and learn how not to fly your "New Baby."

Below is the link to all of the downloads offered by DJI for the Mini, including the User Manual.

After you read the Manual, read it again, you will be surprised what you missed the first time and you will be better prepared for that first "scary moment…"

No, you are not an old guy. I am old guy. Still flying M3 and Mavic Mini 4 Pro and video editing and publishing in Vimeo and You Tube.

Treat yourself you won't regret it. I want to get a mini too. But I need to sell my air2s flymore combo first. I didn't think before I bought it from best Buy so I haven't been able to have the fun I would have if I got the mini. I live close to the Trenton Air Base so I don't risk flying it around here. Enjoy your mini. And treat yourself to another mini less headaches and don't need the licence. Good luck with your move also

I finally just learned something this morning which is interesting when they're gonna go write something this little blue circle sort of with an error up that means your caps are on I didn't know that or you'd start typing I've seen it like a whole pile of times I just click on it and it goes away but then of course it stays a position

I have owned a few number of dones in the last seven years and would suggest the Mavic Air

I have a Mavic 4 Pro Combo with the RC Pro 2 controller and an Air 3S with the Fly More Combo have had a few Mini's over the years the last one a Mini 4 Pro Fly More Combo. The Mini is a great little drone and the soon to be released Mini 5 looks like it's going to have some great upgrades to make it more Pro like but it’s going to cost more than the current Mini 4 Pro Fly More Combo at $1,429.00 on Amazon most likely $200.00 to $300. More in Canada. The Air 3S is priced at $1,839.99 at Amazon and is a far superior drone than the Mini. The on big issue with the Mini is flying in the wind, if there are gusty winds keep your Mini on the ground and always check the wind speed at different altitudes before you fly. The picture quality on the Air 3S is excellent and the best bang for the buck currently. Welcome on board, I live in Nanaimo BC. Cheers AL
