Happy Hanukkah, everyone!😊✡️Hanukkah.webpuav.webp

I'm an atheist, but happy festive season to all regardless of your religion ☺️
Excuse my boldness, but why did you become an atheist? If you humbly ask God to show himself to you, he will! it's as simple as that- just a little faith!

And pls excuse mine in replying to a question you didn't aim at me ! :) We didn't become atheists. All humans start off that way ! Animals stay that way, and increasingly smaller and smaller percentage of humans being the exception.

And Atheists are not so by choice - we are simply unable to believe in the existence of a god - our brains won't do it, even if we wish they could ! Not that this thread is a suitable place to jump on that inexhaustible roundabout again, but if you want to know how that feels, just try and believe in Santa for a bit ! Can you genuinely do it ? ;)

If you look up the origins of Christmas, you'll see that it actually celebrates Jesus Christ's birth. (God's son). Jesus came down to this earth to die and to pay for our sins on the cross. Then he rose from the dead! (Easter). God loves you, and he wants to have a relationship with you. You just need to let him into your life and be sorry for all the sin you have done. It's hard to believe God exists, until you really seek him. Then he will most certainly show himself to you. If you've got questions, I recommend searching up on YouTube Ray Comfort. Some great stuff he's done there.
Cheers,
Daniel M

Are you open to the fact that there might be a God? If you are, ask him to reveal himself to you. He will if you ask him!

Oh brilliant - if you're doing Ray Comfort, please start with this one, for which poor Ray has been the gold standard of atheists' jokes for 30 years ! But his hilarious ignorance of how nature works never stops being funny :) Go Ray !!

We don't need to mock each other for our beliefs.... Just take into consideration what I said, though.

Yes, never my intention to mock anyone for their beliefs. But poor old Ray brings it on himself, doubled down on what he said for years afterwards, and then when someone showed him what an actual uncultivated wild banana looks and tastes like he went on to claim his original interview on the subject had been a joke. Nobody believed him then, and we certainly don't now. But his heart is obviously in the right place, and he remains quite a likeable chap, despite everything ! I bear him no ill will whatsoever, and rather like him as a person, but I find him (clinically) interesting, in that it is deeply intriguing how a human brain can remain so deluded for so long, and fascinating insight into the way brains can compartmentalise information in a way that allows them to function normally in the world, accepting all the laws of physics and reality, and scientific progress humans have made therein whilst still persisting an indefatigable belief in god even now that humans know a god is not necessary for an explanation of how we and the earth got here ! :)

If you haven't seen it, do check out the interview he did with Matt Dillahunty a few years back. Unfortunately for him all of Ray's claims fall instantly apart when subjected to the most basic scrutiny, so he spends all 2 hours of it diverting, changing the subject, not answering the question and keeping up the ridiculous pretence that he wasn't serious the first time round ! It is fair to say he has never really recovered from the 'banana incident'...

Check out the Bill Nye/ Ken Ham Debate- look it up on YouTube.

Pls don't be sad, Dan - I never meant to upset you, or anyone; not even Ray ! I am fully in support of your first post as well, wishing everyone some seasonal goodwill, so let's agree that we can't agree, and not worry about it any more ?! :)

PS - I have seen the Nye / Ham debate, and him being shown round the creationist ark museum thing. It was interesting, for the same reasons as the Comfort / Dillahunty debate was. If I may return the favour for some recommended reading, allow me to suggest 'A universe from nothing' by Laurence Krauss.

I'm sorry but matter simply cannot just pop into existence- it can't come from nothing. There has to be a creator. Therefore, it rules out the big bang theory- it just isn't scientific. As for evolution, I certainly don't see apes these days turning into humans. We see change of characteristics in various animals to match their environment, but we don't actually see them changing into different "more advanced" animals.

Anyways, wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

but we don't actually see them changing into different "more advanced" animals.
Of course - it happens over hundreds of thousands of years - not timescales we can usefully observe. But we can, and have found the evidence in the fossil record just as we have done for transitional forms.

You must be winding me up, right ? Otherwise you'd be coming across as someone who hasn't read any of the counter arguments to their position ! Evolutionary biologists have never claimed that apes turned into humans, but we are both descended from a common ancestor. Here's Captain Dawkins explaining that in case you would find it helpful.

It is not helpful for us to enter a circular debate about these things, so I will end my part in this here, with a final recommendation that you read Richard Dawkins book The God Delusion, and if your faith can withstand and rebuff that, then it is worth holding on to ! And yet, no-one likes a Christmas carol more than he does ! :) Peace and goodwill to all I say, no matter what you do or don't believe...

It does, man. My faith is based on my relationship with God. He has shown me, and I know beyond all doubt that he does indeed love everyone and does exist. Anyway, Merry Christmas!
