A quick question to my American brothers
You are in a field. In the middle of that field there is a 500 ft tower. What’s you rules around flying over this tower

Cheers

In the US, the recreational flyer cannot exceed 400 feet AGL and therefore would not be able to go over the top of a 500 ft tower....regardless where they launch from. Their option is to go around the tower regardless of class of airspace.

I think I know the rules for part 107 but someone else can chime in with the differences.

Under FAA Part 107 rules, you can fly a drone over a structure taller than 500 feet, provided you stay within a 400-foot radius of the structure and do not fly higher than 400 feet above the structure's topmost limit. This exception allows you to exceed the 400-foot above ground level (AGL) general limit, but you must also maintain the required 3 statute miles of visibility and the proper distance from clouds.

Key Part 107 rules for flying near tall structures
  • Altitude: You can fly more than 400 feet AGL, but only if you are within a 400-foot radius of the structure. Your maximum altitude is 400 feet above the immediate uppermost limit of the structure.

  • Radius: The operation must be within a 400-foot radius of the structure.

  • Visibility: You must have at least 3 statute miles of visibility from the control station.

  • Clouds: You must remain at least 500 feet below clouds and 2,000 feet horizontally from them.

  • Structure definition: The FAA considers a structure to be a man-made object, such as a building, tower, or other vertical object.

  • Remote pilot certificate: You must hold a remote pilot certificate to operate under Part 107 rules.

Interesting . Thanks for that. I was just curious.
We are permitted to only fly 100ft higher than the structure within 400ft from the structure.

No. You can fly 400ft ABOVE the structure, and you must remain within a 400ft radius of the structure.

His profile shows he is in Australia so our rules do not apply. He would have to find the rules for his country.
i know the rules for my Country. I was curious about the FAA rules

You will see plenty of recreational drone flyer videos above the tallest building in the US city because they believe they are in a sheltered area and therefore safe....but it's illegal. I guess it's not enough to mention in the TRUST that 400 feet AGL is *the* limit. Strangely a lot of people believe the "G" in AGL stands for the rooftop of a building.
