Hello from the north side of Chicago Illinois. Not new to drones, had a DJI Phantom 2, was an awesome drone until it decided it wanted to take a forever sleep in lake michigan last spring, then got me a Holy Stone HS-720.... its a nice drone, just not a DJI, and as of yesterday at 5 am, when amazon dropped it off, I am a DJI owner again, got the mini se. Charged it up along with its controller and took it up for its first flight, even though it was quite windy.... like 10 mph sustained with gusts to around 20-25 mph it flew awesome, much more stable and the video quality is amazing. Would have thought the Holy Stone would have been better in wind because it is heavier, that does not seem to be the case at all, this little mini handled that wind like a champ. very impressed with it. Currently studying for the faa part 107 test, a lot of it seems totally unneeded for drones, some interesting material especially the part on weather... just started the part on air space. Since we have to fly under 400 feet, and within sight seems to me that the faa went overkill by requiring this at all, seems like a way to know who people are and an easy way for the government to take more money from people and provide nothing. however it is an interesting course.

@caryflyboy ,when the first DJI Mini drone was released ,it was called the Mavic Mini
with the advent of the second version it was just called Mini 2,the mavic name being dropped ,in line with other drones in the stable, such as the Air2 and Air 2s ,so i would consider the one you have would be called the Mini se

Welcome from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, USA. We have a Member's Map in the Upper Right of the Title Bar.

Even in Chicago, there are a couple of Legal Things you may need to do…

Although you are an old hand with drones, you still need to get your TRUST Certificate. You can get that at the Pilot Institute Web Site (FREE…) . You little SE weighs less than 250-grams (0.55 pounds) and you are flying under The Exception for Recreational Flyers at this time so you are not required to register your Drone yet, but that will change once you get your Part 107.

I registered my Mini 2 because the TRUST Certificate and FAA Registration established me as a "certified" Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Flyer.

Link to the FAADroneZone (Optional for Drones under 250-Grams…)

Since you live in Illinois, there are specific laws and rules for you to follow, please check to ensure these are current.

Even though you have experience with drones, you did let one go swimming… Now, for some Good Old Fashion Advice…

Do not let the excitement of the moment get the best of you. When you are going out to fly, do it slowly and deliberately. Get used to a set procedure and even practice it.

There are so many things I could write but these are the highlights that I feel need mentioning.

Plug in your phone/tablet into your controller; turn on the Controller and DJI Fly App (if it does not start on its own…). On the Drone, open the front legs, then open the back legs, then remove the Gimbal Cover.

The Gimbal is the most delicate item on the Drone and banging or bumping can damage it. I also fastened a short "Remove Before Flight" ribbon to the cover so it's more noticeable and I do not forget to remove it…

Turn on the drone and watch it come to "life." Watching the Gimbal go through its self-check is almost like watching a kitten or puppy opening its eyes for the first time…

Place the drone down (preferably on a Landing Pad) while it finishes its self-test (collecting satellites, etc…).

Check your battery status (Phone, Drone, and Controller), check the Signal Strength, by now the Controller should have reported it updated the Home Point.

Lift off, 4-5 feet (1-1/2 meters) or so, hover a bit, check the controls (move the drone a bit forward, back, left, right, yaw left and right). By now, your Controller will probably report again, Home point Updated.

If you go out in a rush and race thru your start up and take off before the drone has finished it prep, it may update its Home Point over that pond or that old tree you are flying over and in your excitement, you'll fly the drone long past it Low Battery point and when it engages Return to Home and lands in the pond or in a tree; it will be all on you…

Now go have fun, learn to fly the drone by sight before you try to fly it out a distance depending on the video feed, FPV.

I would also advise you to use YouTube and watch a lot of the Videos on flying and setting up the Drone. When it is too dark, too cold, or too wet, you can "fly it vicariously" through YouTube. Also watch some of the Blooper Drone Videos and learn how not to fly your "New Baby."

Below is the link to all of the downloads offered by DJI for the Mini SE, including the User Manual.

After you read the Manual, read it again, you will be surprised what you missed the first time and you will be better prepared for that first "scary moment…"

Happy, Safe and Legal Droning…

Greetings from Birmingham Alabama, welcome to the forum!

Thats the one thing I always seem to forget is the gimbal cover.... proably because the phantom 2 used a gopro 4 camera. might have to make a thing like you did.

because my phantom 2 and HS-720 were over 250, they were registered so affixed one of the stickers on the mini, especially since it also has my phone number.... don't mind that registration part so bad, and did the TRUST test, that was very easy and FREE. I am finding the part 107 course interesting, but also find it unneeded to fly a drone, most of the information appears to apply more to manned aircraft like planes, helicopters, ballons etc,
