Leave the paint cans on the shelf.
Use one of the floor mats out of your car. The aircraft doesn’t care what color it is.

What would you suggest as a landing pad? Would a doormat work if I sprayed a white X ON IT?
A doormat would work just fine without spraying paint on it. Or a car floor mat. Or the sidewalk, patio, or picnic table.

Check out the Pilot Institute free Deep Dive video on your drone. Take it slowly and you'll be fine.

Thank you so much for this. I think I might ask on my local Facebook community page to see if someone would actually meet up and talk me thru my first flight
Not a bad idea, but if you don't go bull-at-a-gate and make sure you're well away from dogs off leads, sugar-fuelled kiddies or sundry other sticky-beaks, you'll be fine.

Baby steps might be irritating, but like learning to drive a car: (we all think we're going to hop in and be able to fling it round like Nigel Mansell... showing my age there) it takes time and repetitive practise of basic fine positioning/handling skills before it all starts to become muscle memory.

If you are inclined to fly it indoors at first then make sure the room is well lit, preferably from above, and that the floor has a clear, readily discernable pattern. The drone has an optical vision system, VPS, that will be responsible for position holding indoors and it needs good lighting and clearly visible targets to work.

This is good advice, due to the awful weather we are currently having i have been unable to fly outside i didn't want to fly indoors as my rooms are quite small and i have crashed my small drone several times in the past, impatience got the better of me and i gave it a go taking off from a small table in the centre of the room, i put the drone in cinema mode so it would react slowly to my input and i took off by pressing the sticks down and towards the centre to get the props spinning then lifted off using the left stick upwards i didn't want to use auto take off in case it smashed into the ceiling.
The drone flies great its really predictable if you move the sticks slowly and it hovers great if you let go of them (unlike my toy drone) i have gone through three batteries getting used to the controls and am having a great time, i cannot wait to get outside and give it a proper try,

Actually I wouldn't use cine mode indoors.
I know it's strange but I have the impression that it is less stable indoors than N mode.
Can't remember whether that comes from the Minis or the Mavic 2 but I normally use N mode

Its definitely more stable and slower in cinema mode, in normal mode its more fidgety and moves much quicker and in a small room that is the last thing a new flyer like myself needs.

Not being argumentative but speed is down to you moving the elevator etc. and overcoming the instinct for large reflex movements of the joysticks.
I would also suggest that if you are on a recent version of the ap,p setting all the EXPO settings to 0.5 which gives a straight line ( linear ) graph i.e. predictability. Any other value causes curve to appear in the response vs stick movement graph i.e. 'x'deg of stick movement can result in differing ampunts of response from the drone at different points in the graphs.

As I said I chose cinema mode because I am in a small room so I wanted to be sure pushing the stick a little too fast or far was not going to end in a crash, I have tried normal mode but find cinema mode far more predictable you may not agree but it works for me.
