I started a few weeks back with a DJI Mini 4K...

I now have the Mavic 4 Pro. I am self-employed and have an I.T. Business so some aspects have been very easy for me but I still have a lot to learn about the Mavic, Drones and production using Final Cut Pro.

I was going to get either the Air 3S or this but the Mavic camera and power was just a bit too tempting. I got it this week and have already done a number of flights. It is magic.

I have a PPL from years ago and flew gliders and I also love photography and have a Canon 5D3 on my desk at the moment. I must admit the iPhone is so easy to use though and is the camera you have in your pocket. The iPhone doesn't have wings and neither does the Canon but the Mavic does...I can see advantages.

Perth is a very windy city and the Mini 4K when you fly it...all too often you get wind alerts. I know it is still safe to fly by going into wind and then flying home downwind but I definitely want something with more speed and power from a practical point of view.

The Mini 4K is very impressive although the other issue was connection stability and range which is somewhat limiting although the range is still very useful.

Now my Mavic learning begins!

Welcome mate. Your going to love the mavic 4. So many drones before this has enabled DJI to really refine this bird.
Flight time, stable connection, good camera system and great flight dynamics make it an amazing piece of kit.

A big welcome to the forum from the UK!

I’m very envious, what a drone to start out with 😍

I am mad...madly in love else I couldn't spend this money. I am aware too that a flying camera isn't as safe as a ground based one. I did get the AirCare Refresh package...prudent.

I did a quick flight tonight and the screen looked all washed out...then realised it was in DLog...I had no idea. It is much easier to fly and safer than the Mini 4K but obviously does a lot more from the camera point of view and it moves...fast.

Yes, what you say is exactly the truth...the constant invention and progress building on earlier designs and it will be that it will become superseded, in time, by even better designs.

It is a fantastic bird and so safe and easy to fly. I went out on a bush track on my mountain bike and flew the Mini 4K...trying to manually land it on a narrow track in wind...I guess it was bush and trees and the Mavic was too precious but flying it would have been so much easier.

Even if you have flown Drones before, here is some Good Old Fashion Advice…

You paid a lot of money for that Drone, put your phone number on it. If your drone gets lost or stuck in a tree and it finally comes down when you are not around, give the finders an opportunity to contact you so it can be returned.

Now, for the Fun Part, But do not let the excitement of the moment get the best of you. When you are going out to fly, do it slowly and deliberately. Get used to a set procedure and even practice it.

There are so many things I could write but these are the highlights that I feel need mentioning.

Plug in your phone/tablet into your controller; turn on the Controller and DJI Fly App (if it does not start on its own…). On the Drone, open the front legs, then open the back legs, and then remove the Gimbal Cover.

The Gimbal is the most delicate item on the Drone and banging or bumping can damage it. I also fastened a short "Remove Before Flight" ribbon to the cover so it's more noticeable and I do not forget to remove it…

Turn on the drone and watch it come to "life." Watching the Gimbal go through its self-check is almost like watching a puppy or kitten opening its eyes for the first time…

Place the drone down (preferably on a Landing Pad) while it finishes its self-test (collecting satellites, etc…).

Check your battery status (Phone, Drone, and Controller), check the Signal Strength, by now the Controller should have reported it updated the Home Point.

Lift off, 6 feet (2-meters) or so, hover a bit, check the controls (move the drone a bit forward, back, left, right, yaw left and right). By now, your Controller will probably report again, "Home point Updated."

If you go out in a rush and race thru your start up and take off before the drone has finished it prep, it may update its Home Point over that pond or that old tree you are flying over and in your excitement, you'll fly the drone long past it Low Battery point and when it engages Return to Home and lands in the pond or in a tree; it will be all on you…

Now go have fun, learn to fly the drone by sight before you try to fly it out a distance depending on the video feed, FPV.

I would also advise you to use YouTube and watch a lot of the Videos on flying and setting up the Drone. When it is too dark, too cold, or too wet, you can "fly it vicariously" through YouTube. Also watch some of the Blooper Drone Videos and learn how not to fly your "New Baby."

Below is the link to the User Manual offered by DJI for the Mini 4K

After you read the Manual, read it again, you will be surprised what you missed the first time and you will be better prepared for that first "scary moment…"

DJI does not yet list a manual for the Mavic 4 Pro…

I look forward to reading how the Mav 4 works out for you.... my Mav 3s have been work horses for me.

Fly On and Fly Safe…
Hi,

Thanks for the help and I should have another look through the manual, as suggested. I am careful to make sure that the home point is updated.

One question is where to find a good source of royalty free music as I use Final Cut Pro and I'd like to put clips to music rather than the limited 'jingles' I find in FCP.

I have flown it a lot aleady and had fun with waypoints...I found that they are great for creating smooth sequences. Hayperlapse might be next. One thing I like is I can record internally if I forget the SD card.

Amazing machine...the way it hovers into my small backyard....I let it land itself...

Cheers,
Grant
