I'm comparing my MAir uploads to stuff like this:

I know YT compresses your uploads, but, I see very little quality loss on those examples. Within Premiere, my edit is really nice. I shot 4K 30 and let Premiere export at the same rez, but once I export and upload, some parts look a bit mushy.

I see the obvious exposure change, here and there, due to it being in auto mode, but theres blur on the edge of the bushes in the beginning, when it is closing in on the rock formation. I know there are optimized export setting options, but that may not help offset YT's compression upon uploading.

Maybe this is just the nature of uploading to YT, but I thought I'd see if I could glean any tricks from anyone here. thanks

At 4K 30 FPS things get tricky. Render your files as an intermediate codec. On Mac ProRes HQ 422. On PC DNxHD.

This will create massive files so be sure you have a few hundred GB of storage availible.

Then take that file and compress it with Adobe media encoder and there is a “YouTube 4K” settings. I think it’s under H.264. Enable maximum color depth and 2 pass encoding.

Basically if you are exporting from premier with “same as original” settings then you are outputing a compressed file. However this isn’t compressed enough for YouTube so it had to compress it again. This is what leads to the issues you are having.

By rendering to a intermediate codec you are uncompressing the file(not completely but a lot) and then taking that uncompressed file and compressing it down from a huge file to a small file media encoder is able to retain more detail and better color depth.

For my photographers out there it’s like making a JPEG for the internet from a raw file instead of converting a maximum quality jpeg into a web JPEG. You lose quality with every compression so only compressing once gives you better quality.

P.S. ProRes and DNxHD do have compression but I use the term “uncompressed” because unless you work for Universal Studios you aren’t ever going to use a real uncompressed video file but it’s easier to explain if I refer to ProRes and DNxHD as “uncompressed.”

Alternatively you could use media encoder to render your video directly into YouTube compression but there’s and old adage “let renderers render and compressors compress.” So this is the thought behind rendering first to an intermediate codec before compressing. Could play with it and see which way works better.

Thanks Brett....I couldn't locate anywhere to transcode to ProRes. I'm on a Mac. I looked in the sequence settings and the editing mode defaults to RED cinema, but there's no prores in the drop down. I can right click on a clip in the bin and see where I can create proxys, but don't see any other related commands. I looked at exporting media and there's no .mov for ProRes there either. So, right now I'm transcoding to DNx thru Media Encoder. There also was no ProRes option in there. I'll see how things go with this test.

DNxHD is fine. I just think a Mac will render into ProRes a bit faster since its optimized for Mac. If you want to use ProRes watch here is a video. All the important info happens in the first 52 seconds and then he starts to confuse so stop at 52 seconds.

I just use my ipad 6th gen with A10 it actually has the capability to download the 4k file right from mavic 2's sdcard without hooking up to a computer or sd reader. Then i wilk go into ipads gallery make sure it is there ....it is then i open lumafusion and edit that 4k file ....it does it with ease, scrub rate is fast, export is near real time....its like an all in one solution. So convenient!!! The ipad also edits h265. But youtube wont play it. Very capable for sure.

Dude that video is phenomenal! I’ll check out lumafusion but I have trouble understanding how the iPad could render or compress a video better than a Mac. I notice with that video that you really don’t have any high bit-rate sequences like leaves blowing in the wind or blazing forest fire. Do you think think maybe that’s why your video compressed better?

I take it back your first scene with the reflections in the building you’ll notice as you orbit that the city in the background is doing what the OP is talking about but it’s just not very noticeable because it isn’t your subject. And BTW there’s some ceiling on bit rate so don’t take that as criticism in the slightest. I don’t think there’s anything you could do there and I only noticed it because I rewatched it looking for high bit rate scenes.

I have a buddy who loves Lumafusion. I've got a 6th gen ipad...I might have to try it at some point.

I transcoded the clips to DNx, then exported the entire sequence using h264/YouTube 1080p, 2 pass. The result is way better than my original export. At this point, it *does* seem that you're right on with the concept. The iPad editing is intriguing, but I like working on my 27" iMac. Here's the new version:

You have to record 4K and extract in 4K
I finally was able after changing device
iPad mini 4 to iPad Air 2 and buying the dongle from apple store then just upload from iMovie to YouTube in 4K
iPhone 6 and 6s can also do it.

It’s not really about performance, but the end result of an export to YouTube.
If your device is able to handle 4K the option will be available. It wasn’t available for me on my iPad mini 4 but from iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6s Plus the 4K option lit rite up for YouTube or export to library in iMovie

Boom!

I love it when things work out! Even the new 720p version looks better than the 1080p original. Still waiting on the 1080P version. Are you able to see that one yet @Topo

Yes nice footage.
Once you figure out your 4K issue it will really make a difference. I watch my 4k footage on YouTube in 1080 and looks great but I have to always remember my exposure settings cause auto bugs out the footage. I’m still learning everyday lol.I still don’t have a 4k tv yet. It breaks my heart to change my 70”aquos it’s to soon.

Hmmm...I used the 1080p export preset within Premiere. When I view it on YT there's a quality setting that defaults to 720, but I can set that to 1080. Where are you seeing the resolution details? I can't find any other details on the page. VLC media info says 1080 on the mp4 that I uploaded.

Yea that’s weird I don’t know
