Haha... yeah, they do go in just fine that way too. If you look into the bottom of the battery cutouts, you'll see they were designed to hold the battery the other way around.

If the batteries are flush or below the foam then you could lay the tablet over them, and the lid foam would hold it in place? looks like enough room.
