Insta360's AntiGravity A1 Takes Aim at DJI with 8K 360° Drone

Did not know that. I read somewhere the drone will be manufactured in India, and just assumed the company was Indian. Should be very interesting to see how this plays out.
Do you have a source for it being manufactured in India? Antigravity is a spin-off of Insta360, which is owned by Arashi Vision Inc. Arashi Vision is based in Shenzhen, where they manufacture their products.

360° cameras are really handy. I bought an Insta360-One six years ago. The technology has improved a lot since then. Even back then, the resulting filesize of the video was enormous because it records a full 360° spherical view. But, the image resolution of the edited video was poor because you're only ever looking at a small slice of the whole recorded sphere. And it certainly wasn't 8k back then.

Here are some samples with the camera mounted on my RC model sailing schooner. While the video is playing, click-and-drag to rotate the view to any desired angle. When played full-screen, rolling the scroll wheel on your mouse will zoom in/out. I didn't have it calibrated properly, so you still see the seam where the front/back lens views aren't stitched together properly.

  • The first video is in non-stabilized mode. Drag the view to focus on any point on the boat, and it stays fixed on that point, pitching and rolling with the boat.
  • The second video is in gyro-stabilized mode, where the camera view remains level and fixed on any selected point on the horizon, as the boat pitches and turns under the camera. In that one you need to keep dragging the view around to follow the boat.
  • The third video is edited according to my own view selections. Once the 360° video is captured and recorded, you can choose to edit it any way you like.

I am definitely going to pick one up when they come out and if they are available here in the US.

I am wondering how DJI will react. DJI can be ruthless against competition.

I like the gyro stabilized version the best. With no sense of scale, it looked like a full sized schooner, until I realized no one was sailing the boat! Very cool!

I made another video of it just last week, but using only an old GoPro camera mounted at different spots on the deck.

Actually, it was the non-stablized version above that I liked best. The GoPro version is nice but the non-stabilized version gave a kind of FPV view under control of the viewer, so you feel like your are flying the FPV drone yourself. Really cool RC schooner, perfect for simulating full sized schooner when all senses of scale disappear.

The closest we now have to this 360 drone capability is the Air 2S Insta360 Sphere camera mount setup, that I own, which straps around the body of the Air 2S, but I never got around to using. Need to dust it off and see if it still works! It had some issue that discouraged me from using it initially. If I remember, it was blocking GPS.

It’s no surprise that DJI has moved into the 360° camera space with the Osmo 360, and it wouldn’t be a stretch for them to apply that expertise to a 360° camera drone. I wouldn’t be shocked if DJI is already exploring that direction.

For now, though, the 360 drone market is Antigravity’s to lose. With DJI restricted from selling new drones in the US, Antigravity has a real opening. provided they can avoid facing similar scrutiny over being a Chinese-made product. They need to come out with a stable product right from the start; that was the mistake GoPro made with the Karma.

I could not find that particular piece that said it would be made in India.☹️

I expect to order one as soon as they come out, but the very interesting part is going to be Landing them. I hope they will be set off enough that they don’t require hand landing.

They are just as Chinese as DJI, so expect the same limitations in January 2026 unless they are delayed. In the mean time, expect an international Antigravity "killer" from DJI well before then. The two are rivals, and DJI turned down their offer of a partnership because DJI are simultaneously working on their own 360 drone!

"Payload detection system?" No thanks. I wouldn't want something to prevent me from carrying accesories to useful altitudes, like small animals or cold beverages 😉.

DJI 360 drone rumors incoming. Looking good! Can't find any good links ATM.
Igor Bagdanov's leaks have been pretty accurate in the past. He posted these today

Also...

It looks like we are about 2 months away from the release of the Antigravity A1. With DJI losing access to the US market, this would be the right time for a competitor to jump into this space. Until they get added to the list as a Chinese company. Antigravity's parent company is Insta360, with headquarters in Shenzhen

have they received a license from the FCC yet?

even if they have we now know that license can be revoked

Until the FCC tries to revoke an existing license for an established product with lots of owners, I'm not giving much credence to that silly decision the FCC voted itself.

It's very questionable the commission has the statutory authority to grant itself such power, not to mention all sorts of constitutional "takings clause" issues that will surely arise quickly in lawsuits.

I did a quick search and did not see filings for Arashi Vision, the company that owns Insta360, that could be considered a drone. Until the shutdown is over, all FCC license applications are on hold.

I am going to agree with this, you definitely have to get FCC before you can sell to anyone in the US even if you get FCC the day before you complete a sale. No retailer will allow it; however, NO FCC CERT probably won't stop places like eBay selling from shipping to someone who pays for it regardless their location. The onus would be on the buyer. Drones wouldn't be the first product to face this dilemma.

I also believe if the FCC revokes the certifications, legitimate US sales would have to end immediately upon notification. Anyone who doesn't believe this is not the FCC goal should watch the FCC segment on why they did this and it will be evident. Really no need to debate this aspect, this came directly from the FCC Reichskommissars.

As for the power to do something, as long as Congress is not doing anything about it, these government agencies whether it's the FAA or the FCC will do whatever they wish and even if Congress opposed it, they won't act to override or block it. Ultimately I can see an EO which gives these agencies teeth under the Executive to do pretty much whatever they want and as you have seen so often in the past, only SCOTUS can effectively stop it. I hate to say it but SCOTUS is busy, they're not going to listen to any drone arguments.
