Ipad mini gps - contract needed?

Hi guys, just a quick query... If I were to purchase an iPad mini 4 (the opinion seems to be this is quite a good device for the mavic?) with GPS... Do I need to pay for a contract to use the GPS features, or is it that this model just happens to have the GPS built in? Thanks very much

No. GPS will work on device whether or not the cell service is active.

That's good to know. So why do people talk about downloading offline maps if you don't have cell service?

Because services like Google Maps would otherwise require a data connection to download maps for an area when you're away from WiFi. GPS will give you a position, a data connection would be required for maps.

It's why GPS devices like TomTom and Garmin have maps preloaded.

You can use Google Maps and tell it to download maps of a specific area to your device. They will be available when you no longer have a data connection.
