ipad pro switched off

i used it for flying my mavic pro on a tripod connected to controller, luckily it switched off immediately after landing. ipad was at 24% battery but since it was 0 celcius, it died the moment i disconnected the controller (not sure if thats the reason).

Now what would have happened if Mavic was flying a mile away like it was 2 minutes before, does it return home automatically. Since i am going to fly it in the cold again, just want to be sure.

The ipad is just a display. RTH "should" work from the controller. Unless the controller disconnected from the aircraft you would need to initiate the RTH by pushing the button.
