If he had spent his own (earned, not just given to him) money, I really want to think his attitude would be different. You give something to somebody, they really, for some reason don't, appreciate it as much as if they purchased it themselves....
And a side point, back in the day? we had to build these things ourselves. whether rc plane, car, heli, or drone. And while you were building the darn thing, you LEARNED things along the way. Now, folks go to the store, plop down some money (see what I did there?), go home, charge up, and sometimes things go well, sometimes they don't.
More often than not, they usually end up posting in the "Crash" section...
