My drone suffered a disconnect today due to cell phone battery dying and my Mavic Air managed to land by itself in mid flight. I pulled up "Find My Drone" on DJI GO 4 and drove a couple of blocks where the map last tracked it. I found it within 50 ft. of where the map indicated it went down. ! Yes I was flying within line of sight and was pretty certain of where it went down. Thank you DJI for making my day!

What does your cell phone battery dying have anything at all to do with your "disconnect".
The RC controller is what is flying and controlling your drone, not the cellphone.
Why didn't you just hit RTH?
As long as the drone announced that "the home point has been recorded", it should RTH as long as there is enough battery in the drone.

I might be missing something here, please correct me if I’m wrong. (Gently). Isn’t the controller an optional extra with the MA.
If the OP hasn’t got one, then he can only use his phone to control the bird.
Hence why he lost connection when his battery died.
There’s no excuse for not checking the state of battery although an old weak battery can suddenly drain when coping with the extra load. Maybe next time take a portable power pack to keep the phone charged, they aren’t expensive.
And check the RTH settings before flying.
Best wishes to all. Brian

Since my original post I have discovered that one of my DJI batteries will no longer take a charge. I suspicion this battery was the one in use when my Mavic Air decided to drop connection? The battery is less than 6 months old so am hoping it is under warrenty.
