Yes. it's the way the file is being encoded rather than the storage format which causes the split.

I would have liked to see some kind of numerical file extension to denote whether a clip is from a spliced recording vs a single recording.

You can always rename them anyway you like. Tip: If you have no 4 minute recordings, they are all single recordings
