Mavic 3 not landing accurately in RTH

You need to recalibrate your IMU and Compass anytime there's a DJI firmware update.

Although I rarely use the RTH feature, a couple of times it would have missed the landing pad by 3-5 ft, had I not stopped the RTH and manually landed the drone.

I just recalibrated both my IMU and my compass and it resolved the problem.

No .. there is no need at all to recalibrate anything after a firmware update.

Your drone was simply using GPS alone to find the landing spot (approximately).

That wouldn't have made any difference to RTH autolanding accuracy.
There was nothing wrong with your drone that needed resolving.

While it's never necessary to perform these calibration processes after updating firmware, it certainly won't hurt as long as they're done correctly. That said, there's a greater risk of messing up a proper calibration than leaving an already good calibration as is.

I have found on my M3 that if I dont let it hover over my take off point for about a minute it comes back and misses the spot by 2-3 feet.

No hovering is necessary.
The manual is quite clear about this.
All that's required is to rise vertically to 7 metres before moving off horizontally.
