If I sent back a Mavic Air 2 for gimbal damage, will they repair it or will they send me a new or refurbished drone?

no, I didn't think I would need it, and turns out I did

DJI will charge you to repair it, unless you can prove it's a warranty claim

You could get a new ..possibly refurbished drone. Hard to guess until you check the serial number. They'll only charge you for what they fix. They are good about itemizing that.
