seems to be putting alot of stress on the holders which can possibly encourage premature wear or breakage

I doubt this will stress/break the remote controller. It's built like a tank.

The ipad mini 2 is just fine. It fits without pushing or putting pressure on the arms or force them to spread wider than they do on their own. The ipad mini 4 is slightly larger (2-3mm) than the mini 1-3 and probably would put pressure on the arms to spread further than they will on their own.
