Hello, I have a “big” birthday coming up next month and am hoping to acquire a DJI Flip. I’ve read a lot about it and I’m aware the maximum take off altitude is 3000m. I did read somewhere (which I now cannot find) that if you go for the intelligent flight battery option, that it allows you to take off from a higher altitude and fly a little longer. I live in the French Pyrenees and often would climb up to around 3000m and sometimes a little more. Obviously this is prime drone footage location but I don’t want to take the plunge and make the purchase if the drone won’t fly above this height.
Thanks in advance for any and all advice and opinions everyone.

The maximum takeoff altitude for the DJI Flip drone is 3,000 meters (9,800 feet). This specification is independent of the battery type, meaning the DJI Flip's max takeoff altitude remains 3,000 meters whether using the standard Intelligent Flight Battery or the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus, as the Battery Plus primarily extends flight time rather than influencing altitude limits.

Thanks very much for your quick reply. I wonder has anyone tried taking it above this altitude or what would actually happen if I was to exceed this limit. It would only be perhaps a maximum of 500m more as the highest mountain in the range (Aneto) is only 3404m

That's the maximum service ceiling, higher than that and the drones ability to 'bite' the air (to produce lift) diminishes because the air becomes progressively thinner. Higher than the service ceiling: the motors have to work much harder.

You need props with a wider profile to produce more lift in high altitude zones, but 'normal' props will still work, the downside is that the motors are a lot more stressed and your battery won't last as long.

On top of that: trying to fly a little Flip in mountainous terrain like the Pyrenees? You're braver than I am.

Thanks, my budget is limited but based on your experience, would a Mini 4 Pro perform better. I wouldn’t take it up in high winds.

I really am trying to be kind. It sound like you need something a little more than a flip.. a flip is a good drone but we dont want the little motors over heating or failing. I thinkrwlix le chat will agree. A slight gust unbalanced the drone causing more stress on the drone.
What's ur budget?
Would you go refurbished?

It's the gusts in mountainous terrain that will give you the nasty surprises.

I've flown from the top of some pretty pedestrian mountains (compared to the ones near you) and wind conditions have been dead calm on the way up, but running at a steady 25-35mph closer to summit, then hard gusts of 40+mph coming from nowhere (hand held anemometer).

I was using a Mavic 2 Pro (nearly 1kg) and it was more luck than judgement I got it back for a hand catch... and that was on a fine late summer day... but it's like anything in life: if you don't take the risk, you won't get the reward.

For what it's worth, I flew a DJI Neo at 2750 meters MSL in Costa Rica. It was marginal. DJI lists the "maximum takeoff altitude" for the Neo as 2000 meters. The rated numbers are likely somewhat conservative.
That’s great. I guess they need to be on the conservative side. I’m planning only still weather shooting so hopefully will work ok at just over 3000m.

The takeoff altitude (service ceiling) specification is quite conservative. For example the Mavic 3 has 6000 meters max service ceiling, but people have taken off from the top of Mt. Everest with it, and ascended to over 9000 meters above sea level.
