Good point about adding it to an existing plan. In my case, when I looked at that, it was going to be a LOT more expensive because AT&T, which is the carrier for my family's cell phones, did not offer anything even close to the $10/month price I quoted.

I just added a SIM to my iPad and my AT&T account $10 plus tax per month and no contract. Works perfectly for on the fly LAANC authorization, weather and live maps. I would previously tether it to my phone which worked fine but then my phone battery takes the hit.
If you haven’t already purchased check out GameStop for refurbished iPads. Lower price and you can get a high end one for much less!

I tried an IPad Mini4 cellular model. I was not that happy with it. The screen ratio does not match the 16 x 9 format so there were black bars at the top and bottom and thus wasted space for the display size and weight. The brightness was just adequate, not as good as my phones. A hood of some sort is still needed. While it would mount in the arms, that leaves it facing straight up at the sky. I prefer to have it tilted up towards my face, which of course requires a mount. I sold it after just two weeks.
I just purchased the 10.5" Samsung s5e tablet. It has GPS built in without having to pay for a cellular model. Samsung has a trade in program which gave me $50 off by sending in an old tablet. That made it cheaper than even the non cellular IPad Mini. The screen is much brighter, the bezels are very thin, and the format is ideal for 16 x 9 video. It has a slot for a micro sd card and it will play 4k video from the card without stuttering. The larger screen size really helps with my failing vision and fat fingers. This tablet is a bit heavier and will of course require a mount. I plan to make one that stays attached to the back of the tablet and folds flat when not in use.
