It's been a terrible day for the people of the village of Blatten in Switzerland, as half the mountain their town sits beneath has fallen off it !
I have been watching the events leading up to this known-to-be-imminent glacier collapse for a week now, and today it dropped the motherload. Fortunately everyone and the animals were evacuated last week, so no loss of life thank goodness, but you still have to feel for all the people who have lost their homes, livelihoods and way of life as a result of this devastating, landscape-changing landslide.
I post here some drone footage I found taken both during the collapse and in the aftermath, which is pretty breath-taking and awe-some (perhaps awe-ful a more appropriate word) record of the event. Its inevitability meant there were lots of cameras watching, but this is the first drone footage (source / pilot unclear) I found of the actual event in progress...
It's not clear if the drone escaped that first shot without crashing due to particulates in the air, but you see it try to get away from the advancing debris cloud and fail to do so.
