This is nothing nefarious, nor illegal, for the most part.
In 2023 there was an established drone testing corridor approved for the testing of drones.
Guess where it is.

So, why the uptick?
There isn't an uptick.
What there is, is less daylight.

I posit there isn't increased activity but, rather, more lighted night flying, SIMPLY because there's less daylight hours.
In August, if flying at 8PM it's light and nobody would notice a drone. In December, it's dark and the operator would need lights.

It's that simple.

In other words,
Nothing to see here. Move along folks.

If Ken Stewart comes out on TV tonight and says sorry about that, we didn't mean to scare the public with our secret experiments out in the public space like that but yes, that was us....then we are done with it. Not holding my breath.

"Federal investigators have processed approximately 5,000 reported sightings, with only about 100 cases still requiring further investigation. A joint statement from the Department of Homeland Security, FBI, FAA, and Department of Defense revealed that many reported drones were actually conventional aircraft, helicopters, or even celestial objects misidentified as unmanned aircraft."

Larry Hogan (Former Governor of Maine) took a photo of the constellation of Orion, claiming the "lights" were drones that needed to be investigated. That's gotta be embarrassing.

If Larry wants to take a photo of something in that constellation, the Orion Nebula is in the sword and it's one of the brightest nebulas in the sky! I've taken a handful of photos of it.

Thanks for the silly example from the pool of 5,000 nonsense sightings; got any examples from the 100 pool?

Pentagon General was asked and answered this question directly and he said there is no connection whatsoever.

No connection to what?

These guys have admitted some of the sightings are them.
Are you claiming that NASA is flying drones over the UK and Germany as well? The winged type of drone that overflew my home at least 50 times has a totally silent pulse jet engine and I have the jet blast on film, besides if this was NASA they would all be falling from the sky like everything NASA flies. And how would the Pentagon not know what NASA was doing? So if they say it was NASA then you know that they were hiding something larger

The problem is journalists like this writing...

Just listen to the general, it's in the first 3 minutes and see for yourself what you think about his answer:

I don't. Perhaps the remaining cases are just as silly as those already investigated.

What makes you think it's anything more than that?

Wasn't reply to you just using what appears to be a fact the you quotes and it's probably true. Second poster pointed out the obvious first part but completely ignored the hard question, the second part. I get there are 5,000 bogus cases, there might be 10,000 or more. Trying to steer everyone away from the nonsense and get serious but apparently people having too much fun with it. The government, too....they refuse to talk about those 100. They simply said there are over a million registered drones and at least 1800 consumer drones flying across the country every day, wow.

It's been a month, and all the news and information sources keep repeating the same "we don't know" narrative. That leads me to believe there's nothing nefarious happening.

You found a very interesting article that references an August 2024 DHS memo that was supposedly not intended for public consumption. The Memo is titled Growing Illicit Use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems by Violent Extremists in the Homeland Likely Presents New Security Challenges.

The Memo suggests pushing for an all new drone regulatory scheme to get around legal concerns raised in 2020
Advisory on the Application of Federal Laws to the Acquisition and Use of Technology to Detect and Mitigate Unmanned Aircraft Systems. Amazing coincidence that this was just three months ago.
