Thinking about the reaction of many when the word "drone" is mentioned.

Far too much unfair and unwarranted antipathy in some cases and even
outright hostility, is becoming all too prevalent.

In my opinion we need a change of name from "Drone" to "Aerocamera"
(With or without the Capitals).

The name "Aerocamera" more aptly describes these wonderful little machines
we enjoy using, mostly for aerial photography and videography.

I really don't think "non believers" understand the role these machines
are mainly being used for in the real world.

Everywhere from pure, clean, enjoyable, entertainment, to higher forms of
usefulness, such as searching for lost people or animals, checking roofs
and solar panels. Hundreds of different aerial photo and video uses,
so many more than can be listed here.

Those few bad fellows who do the wrong thing, like using "drones" for
ulterior spying type missions etc, need to be "re-educated" urgently.

They certainly need to be made aware of the damage they cause to the
reputations of everyone involved by association with the Hobby.

This needs to happen urgently, before the whole category deteriorates
and we all lose the privilege and pleasure of legally owning and flying
each of these wonderful devices.

Tell me what you think - all comments welcome!

totally agree i hate the term drone i use UAV when i talk to people about my hobby

Good luck with that. No matter what we call them the public will still call them drones. The negative connotations aren't because of the name, it's because of what some irresponsible owners do with them.

Thanks to you all,
Your opinions appreciated - Still the point remains that in some quarters the very name "drone" itself has negative vibes.

Although the over reactions come mainly from certain types, who make it their habit to condemn anything unfamiliar - (fear of the unknown?)

I like the name "UAV" suggested by Torcan - more suitable than "drone" in my opinion.

Funny thing to me is that when I tell people that I fix drones for a living, for the most part, they say, "Oh wow. Thats great. What's a drone?"

Its true! Most women have no clue, and the guys think I repair Predators. Thats what comes to their minds.

Per Meriam-Webster: "Drone" - an unmanned aircraft or ship guided by remote control or onboard computers.

What we fly are unmanned, remote controlled, multirotor helicopters.
Typically quadcopters but also hexacopters, octocopters, etc.
These are a subset within the drone definition.

UAV or Quadcopter might be better than Drone to describe our aircraft but, as others have mentioned, the general population and media will still think "drone".

Just my $0.02 worth for today. :)
Have fun and fly safely.
