I need a cell phone or pro controller. I have a Samsung z fold phone that I don't believe supports the drone app. Should I buy the 1200$ remote from DJI or buy a cell phone? Any and all advice is welcome.

I should have mentioned I have several ipads I could use. Do I need a cell service for maps?

You telling me it might work?
I haven't the slightest clue either way but testing seems the glaringly obvious thing to do, I see absolutely no drawbacks to that idea.
I bought a second hand Samsung S6 to use with the fly app, in fact several, I think the cheapest was £30 and the most expensive was £90. I have 1.5.4 on one of them and earlier versions on the others.

Welcome to Mavic Pilots! :) Enjoy the forum! Thumbswayup
What Ipads do you currently have? It would be advised that you use a 4th generation Ipad or higher when using the fly app.

No. Load your maps with your home WiFi prior to leaving the house.
Do maps upload through the firmware update or is there a specific process for updating new maps? I use DJI Fly and I can't find a method to update the maps.

Some on this forum have suggested the TriplTek 8” for this. It has a 1200 nit display. At $800 it is a reasonable alternative to Pro controller.

The app you use for flying will load local maps when/if it has internet access.
Maps aren't really important any for most flying.

I use a Tripltek 8 pro and it is pretty amazing. Bigger and brighter than the RC Pro. You can use it for multiple drones too.

While waiting for DJI to update its software for Android 12 and my Pixel 6, I used an older android phone without a sim card with no problem, even during a cross country trip. I figured I could always hot spot to my new phone if I needed to, but never did need to do that.

My advice is to buy a cheap older phone to use as your display.

How long does a full charge last with the TriplTek 8 pro? Does it charge from the controller?
It can I believe but you really won’t need to. It has a massive battery that I used for more than 3 hours of flight and still had most of its battery.
