New Mavic 2 Zoom - movies are not smooth

Hi everybody, I am experienced Phantom 4 pilot. A few days ago I bought a Mavic 2 Zoom to capitalize on the size and the zoom features. My first flights were good but my movies look as though panning and yaw are stuttering. The Phantom 4 are smooth and clean. When I looked at the settings I saw that the default was 2k video. Could that be the reason for the stuttering effect?

yes it could be. also are you recording in 264 or H 265 Codec. Are you zoomed in during the recording. Have you set your Rates for the aircraft flight control and the gimble moment. If you are using it on a computer is the processor able to display rate fast enough (Missing Frames)

Thank you so much for our quick reply. Even though I have had my license in Germany for 18 months there is an overwhelming amount to learn in drone operations.

FYI, I am a master still photographer. I have been a photojournalist for more years than I want to admit. I done every kind of still photography imaginable other than underwater photography. I got into drone photography to take high level Architectural stills and have since gotten hooked on movies.

I really hate to tell you how little I know about video. Can you tell me the pros and cons between working in MOV vs MP4. I don't even understand your Codec question, this is how little I know. Thank you again for your fast reply. Even though I am an old fart I still consider myself a fast learner.

Anything you can think of that are fundamentals I should know world be appreciated. If you have any questions about still photography, feel free to ask.

H264 vs 265 is the codec used to encode the video. (fyi= i am not a guru so others may jump in here and correct my misinformation!). The 265 is processor intensive on the computer side, so if you are not using a higher end computer it would be better to record in 264.

Frame rates. With video (not a concern in still photos) the frame rate and shutter speed needs to be set properly or you can have the stutter effect. If you are doing video playback at 30fps you should try to get shutter speed twice that which means around 1/60. we accomplish this by using filters on the camera lens to reduce the needed shutter speed.

For sunny days I use a ND64 filter which brings my shutter speed down to around 1/60 to 1/100 range with the iso at 100.

Thanks, I do use a high end computer. I have almost 700,000 Raw still images stored on 10 TB of hard disk with another 10 TB of backup. I find it interesting that you try to match your still pictures by bringing down the shutter speed. I would have assumed that you would have set the stills to an f5.6 at 100 ISO to let the shutter speed be as fast as possible to prevent any camera shake. In addition I always shoot in JPG+RawThis is how I do my aerial architecture.

I have been amazed at the quality of the images I have taken with my Phantom 4 Pro. I am currently debating on buying a Mavic 2 pro with the Hasselblad camera. Do you know of any direct comparisons of the Mavic 2 Pro with the Phantom 4 Pro. They each have 1" sensors.

Matching shutter speed with frame rate is only necessary FOR VIDEO. Not stills.

Do a forum or google search, you will find plenty of comparisons between the Pro and the Zoom on image quality.

Jim, it is necessary to determine if this is a playback issue or recording issue. To eliminate playback jitter/ missed frames that can occur during editing render your file (e.g. export it) and view the file. If you get jitter when rendering at 4K, try rendering at 1080p resolution, to rule our jitter caused by a slow processor in your computer. If you still get jitter the problem probably originates in the recording process, e.g. the memory card could not keep up with the the required data rate. High data rates typically occur when panning, flying at low heights, flying over water with ripples, or other situations where the image is changing rapidly frame to frame.
To address this make sure you are using a memory card that is rated for video. There are several data rate specifications out there. Look for cards with a U3 or V30 or V60 rating. UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) designates a performance option designed to support real-time video recording with UHS-enabled host devices. Video Speed Class 30 (V30), sustained video capture rate of 30MB/s, designates a performance option designed to support real-time video recording with UHS-enabled host devices.
Using cards with these ratings should eliminate any artifacts due to data rate bottlenecks that occur during recording.
