Hello, all -

New pilot here, picked up a DJI Mini 4k this summer and totally love flying it. Added an Air 3s last week. I’m studying for my Part 107 license, and looking into the possibilities for some side work as I get closer to retiring from my day job.

I live in a rural area of Connecticut, and we have LOTS of woods and hiking trails around us. Beautiful but treacherous to drones, as my brand-new Air 3s illustrated by perching 50’ up in an old oak.

Laugh at me, everyone else has already. Still gonna fly.

Greetings from Birmingham Alabama USA: welcome to the forum! We look forward to hearing from you!

Hope you were able to recover your Air 3s

Sadly, no. I spent about 6 hours over a few days trying to get it back, but it’s in an area where I can’t get any machinery like a cherry picker, and at 60 I am not trying to climb any trees! I thought about hiring a tree guy to get it, but that will cost me about as much as replacing the drone. Also, it’s resting upside-down with the bottom vents totally exposed to the elements, so I suspect that after the next rain/snow, the electronics will be pretty much toast. If a wind storm knocks it down I’ll retrieve it as a parts donor.

I did file a Flyaway Service request with DJI, not super optimistic about it but worth a shot.

I found a replacement on EBay, someone selling just the drone and a battery, so while it’s an expensive lesson it’s just that, a lesson. No one got hurt, no property damage - could have been worse.

I'm 72 and I'd climb any tree; fortunately I'm pretty fit (trying to get back to extremely fit)

I'd invite you over to help, but I think it would be a long drive.

I broke my collarbone a few years ago, do NOT want a repeat of that experience!
I used to live on the east coast and even worked in CT for a while, however, I can only offer moral support from here.

Welcome from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, USA. We have a Member's Map in the Upper Right of the Title Bar. Click on "Members" and then Click on "Member's Map…" Check it out and you might find some new flying friends.

If you are a New Drone Pilot, there are a couple of Legal Things you may need to do…

First, if you have not already done so and you want to fly your drone recreationally, you will need to get your TRUST Certificate. You can get that at the Pilot Institute Web Site (FREE…). This Link is to the Pilot Institute Web Site where you can get your TRUST Certificate. (FREE…)

Next, if your Mini 4K Drone weighs less than 250-grams (0.55 pounds), and while you are flying under the 44809 Exception for Recreational Flyers, you are not required to register your Drone.

However, if you replace the Air 3S Drone, it weighs more than 250-grams (0.55 pounds), and even while you are flying under The Exception for Recreational Flyers, you are required to register your Drone. This link is to the FAADroneZone where you can register your Drone. The cost is $5.00…

If you are considering acquiring your Part 107 License, here is a link to get you going…

Since you live in Connecticut , there are specific laws and rules for you to follow, please check the link below for all the Rules and Laws that are in effect in your neck of the woods and it also links you to some of the Best Places to Fly in your area… Also, if you travel on vacation, visit friends, and relatives in other parts of the country, check back here so you do not run afoul of the law.

Even if you have flown Drones before, here is some Good Old Fashion Advice…

You paid a lot of money for that Drone, put your phone number on it. If your drone gets lost or stuck in a tree and it finally comes down when you are not around, give the finders an opportunity to contact you so it can be returned.

Now, for the Fun Part, But do not let the excitement of the moment get the best of you. When you are going out to fly, do it slowly and deliberately. Get used to a set procedure and even practice it.

There are so many things I could write but these are the highlights that I feel need mentioning.

Plug in your phone/tablet into your controller; turn on the Controller and DJI Fly App (if it does not start on its own…). On the Drone, open the front legs, then open the back legs, then remove the Gimbal Cover.

The Gimbal is the most delicate item on the Drone and banging or bumping can damage it. I also fastened a short "Remove Before Flight" ribbon to the cover so it's more noticeable and I do not forget to remove it…

Turn on the drone and watch it come to "life." Watching the Gimbal go through its self-check is almost like watching a puppy or kitten opening its eyes for the first time…

Place the drone down (preferably on a Landing Pad) while it finishes its self-test (collecting satellites, etc…).

Check your battery status (Phone, Drone, and Controller), check the Signal Strength, by now the Controller should have reported it updated the Home Point.

Lift off, 6- feet (2-meters) or so, hover a bit, check the controls (move the drone a bit forward, back, left, right, yaw left and right). By now, your Controller will probably report again, Home point Updated.

If you go out in a rush and race thru your start up and take off before the drone has finished it prep, it may update its Home Point over that pond or that old tree you are flying over and in your excitement, you'll fly the drone long past it Low Battery point and when it engages Return to Home and lands in the pond or in a tree; it will be all on you…

Now go have fun, learn to fly the drone by sight before you try to fly it out a distance depending on the video feed, FPV.

I would also advise you to use YouTube and watch a lot of the Videos on flying and setting up the Drone. When it is too dark, too cold, or too wet, you can "fly it vicariously" through YouTube. Also watch some of the Blooper Drone Videos and learn how not to fly your "New Baby."

Fly On and Fly Safe…

Welcome to the forum from the beautiful woods of Maine!
I’m sorry to hear about your loss but it is an error that you willl likely not repeat. I have had three instances where the tree jumped out in front of of my drone and two out of three survived. The last was with my old Phantom P3 and it did fall out of the tree while it was running and buried itself into the ground. Unfortunately it damaged one of the motors so it only does flips when I try to fly it -lol
I’m considering replacing the motor if I can find one at a reasonable price but it might not be the cure…
Fly safe, enjoy and stay safe!

Welcome from the Midwest! Very sorry to hear about your A3S. I have one as well. No more tree climbing for me either. I’ve done it in the past for a rc plane, it wasn’t fun.

So there is a happy ending to this story. After a week stuck in a tree, Mother Nature did me a solid and sent some big wind to blow the drone down. Despite being on its back for a week, exposed to the elements, there was little apparent damage other than a few lost propeller tips. I put the drone and battery in a big plastic bag with a handful of silica gel packs and let it sit for 24 hours. Charged the battery, booted the drone, flew for 5 minutes with no sign of misbehavior or error.

I am a lucky man, and also very impressed by the engineering in this thing! 1 week exposed to the winter elements and still apparently 100% functional!

Be sure to replace those propellers (all of them). They were all battered by those branches... Flying with missing tips create an imbalance and that can create all sort of problems when the motors are under full power (up to 10,000 RPM) and besides having lost a tip or two, the props may have micro cracks that will show up while in the air and it will not fly missing even a small section of a propeller .
