Hey all! New pilot here. Just got a mavic 2 pro. Question for the group. I plan on making money on photography. I know I need to register my drone as a part 107. Do I need to get my part 107 license first? Or can I register the drone under part 107, use it for recreational use while I study for the test, and take the test later?

thanks!

Welcome to the forum. Greetings from San Diego.

You can fly your drone recreationally until you receive your certification. Enjoy your new views. Fly safe.

Welcome to the forum from the deserts of Arizona! Enjoy.

You’ll register yourself as a recreational pilot for now. While you are a Rec pilot all your drones get the same FAA number as it’s actually you who are registered and not your drone(s). After you get your 107 you can provide services for compensation (not necessarily money). After you get your 107 then your drone(s) will need individual FAA numbers that are unique to each drone.

WELCOME to the forum :)

If you are planning to get your Part 107 in the near future (in next 3 years) go ahead and register that aircraft on the Commercial side of DroneZone. Saves you $5 and the hassle of needing to re-register and change Reg# when you do decide to make the change.

Recreational Registration (~44809): the OPERATOR (you) is registered and you put that same # on any and all UAS that you ONLY fly recreationally.

Commercial Registration (~Part 107): The specific AIRCRAFT (serial # etc) is registered and that Reg# can ONLY be used on that one aircraft. The bonus here is a Commercial Registered Aircraft can be flown for Recreational or Commercial Operations.

You got to FAADroneZone and create an account and then do your registration on the "portal" that best suits your needs.

Good luck and SAFE Flights :)
