My name is Jim. I live in Crystal River, Florida. I just purchased a DJI Mavic Pro drone package and I am new to drone piloting. I have read the manual and looked at several videos preparing for my first flight. I am handicapped (in a wheel chair) and thought this would be a good way to get out and hone my flying skills! I have the controller you clamp the phone into and I happen to have an older iPhone 6 I am not using. Charged it up and I have been trying to get some DJI software (DJI Fly) to load to it. It looks like I need iOS 13 or greater for the DJI software. My extra phone has 12.5.7. It looks like the Litchi for DJI Drones app will work with iOS 12. Of course this costs $24.99. Does anyone know where I can download an older version of the DJI Fly app for this phone? Any advice as to how to use this phone (so I do not have to buy a newer one) with this Mavic Pro drone? Thanks...Jim

Greetings from Birmingham Alabama USA, welcome to the forum! We look forward to hearing from you!

Welcome to the forum @Jimgr! :)

That phone is quite outdated. If your primary phone can run the latest version of iOS, why not just use that instead?

My iPhone 14 has an Otterbox case on it and, with the case on, it will not fit within the arms of the controller. I was trying to avoid removing the case each time I wanted to fly, thus, the older phone.

Which type of controller clamp are you currently using?

I have a GL 200A controller with the wings that fold out. I believe it is the original controller that came with the Mavic Pro. As I mentioned, I believe the Litchi app will work with iOS 12, but i would like to know if someone has tried this OR if I can obtain an older version of the DJI software. Maybe there is another way to mount the iPhone in the controller??

Just a quick note and I am not saying that any of these older version will work completely for your needs... there may be features on your drone that will not work with the older versions of the DJI Fly App... You are required to transmit Remote Identification and some of the older versions may not enable your drone to do that...

So, you have been warned!!! Her eis one location...

And another location is...

I will be posting my standard Welcome note after this...

Welcome from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, USA. We have a Member's Map in the Upper Right of the Title Bar. Click on "Members" and then Click on "Member's Map…" Check it out and you might find some new flying friends.

I have already offered you the various web sites to load the older version of Fly App, but now I will preach a little. As a wheelchair bound pilot you wil probably do a lot of flying using only the video without ever being able to see your drone once it takes off. You need to know that is not legal… If you crash your drone and cause damage or injury, no one will take sympathy upon the you for flying from a wheel chair. OK, enough said…

As a New Drone Pilot, there are a couple of Legal Things you may need to do…

If you have not already done so, you will need to get your TRUST Certificate. You can get that at the Pilot Institute Web Site (FREE…). Your Drone weighs more than 250-grams (0.55 pounds), and even while you are flying under The Exception for Recreational Flyers, you are required to register your Drone.

Link to the TRUST Certificate at the Pilot Institute Web Site (FREE…)

Link to the FAADroneZone (Optional Registration for Drones under 250-Grams…)

Since you live in Florida, there are specific laws and rules for you to follow, please check the link below for all the Rules and Laws that are in effect in your neck of the woods and it also links you to some of the Best Places to Fly in your area… Also, if you travel on vacation, visit friends, and relatives in other parts of the country, check back here so you do not run afoul of the law.

Even if you have flown Drones before, here is some Good Old Fashion Advice…

You paid a lot of money for that Drone, put your phone number on it. If your drone gets lost or stuck in a tree and it finally comes down when you are not around, give the finders an opportunity to contact you so it can be returned.

Now, for the Fun Part, But do not let the excitement of the moment get the best of you. When you are going out to fly, do it slowly and deliberately. Get used to a set procedure and even practice it.

There are so many things I could write but these are the highlights that I feel need mentioning.

Plug in your phone/tablet into your controller; turn on the Controller and DJI Fly App (if it does not start on its own…). On the Drone, open the front legs, then open the back legs, then remove the Gimbal Cover.

The Gimbal is the most delicate item on the Drone and banging or bumping can damage it. I also fastened a short "Remove Before Flight" ribbon to the cover so it's more noticeable and I do not forget to remove it…

Turn on the drone and watch it come to "life." Watching the Gimbal go through its self-check is almost like watching a puppy or kitten opening its eyes for the first time…

Place the drone down (preferably on a Landing Pad) while it finishes its self-test (collecting satellites, etc…).

Check your battery status (Phone, Drone, and Controller), check the Signal Strength, by now the Controller should have reported it updated the Home Point.

Lift off, 6- feet (2-meters) or so, hover a bit, check the controls (move the drone a bit forward, back, left, right, yaw left and right). By now, your Controller will probably report again, Home point Updated.

If you go out in a rush and race thru your start up and take off before the drone has finished it prep, it may update its Home Point over that pond or that old tree you are flying over and in your excitement, you'll fly the drone long past it Low Battery point and when it engages Return to Home and lands in the pond or in a tree; it will be all on you…

Now go have fun, learn to fly the drone by sight before you try to fly it out a distance depending on the video feed, FPV.

I would also advise you to use YouTube and watch a lot of the Videos on flying and setting up the Drone. When it is too dark, too cold, or too wet, you can "fly it vicariously" through YouTube. Also watch some of the Blooper Drone Videos and learn how not to fly your "New Baby."

Below is the link to all of the downloads offered by DJI for the Mavic Pro, including the User Manual.

After you read the Manual, read it again, you will be surprised what you missed the first time and you will be better prepared for that first "scary moment…"

Fly On and Fly Safe…

Thanks for your great information. I do have the TRUST Certificate. I am in a powered wheel chair so I can swivel to see the drone. I need to register it and get the drone numbers but I need to be sure it flies (bought it used) first. I have done a lot of research and will continue to do so to be a safe pilot. Looking forward to the experience!!

Word to the wise.... the Mavic pro doesn't use DJI FLY. It uses DJI GO4.

DJI FLY is specifically for the newer drones since the Mavic 2 series and older drones won't connect with it.

Older versions of the DJI GO4 app can be found. Try v.4.3.54. This will work perfectly with your older phone.

Ah, so you're using the actual remote controller.

You can still find some mounts like the Hanatora mount that are able to hold mobile devices in a case.

Thank you Mrktn, Felix and everyone for the greetings and help. I did get the DJI Go4 app to finally load on the iPhone. Seems to be working. Will try for a short flight tomorrow. Also got the drone registered today. I look forward to being on the forum as I get proficient with the Mavic Pro...

The links LoudThunder provided were for Android, not Apple. I have an iPhone. Do you have older files for the iPhone?? Appreciate all your help.
