An iPhone 8 should work fine. Just make sure if it has some age on it, the battery is still capable of holding a good charge. So what model of Mavic are you going to purchase? Mini, Mavic Air 2, Mavic Pro/Zoom?

My impartial recommendation:
Get the Mavic Air 2 with the Fly More Package. It has Everything you need as a beginner. My mentor and teacher, a professional who has a number of drones, told me to go that way. It now has about all the festures you will want of need as a hobbyist or even a professional. Remember, a professional told me to go that way.
