So i'm a new Mavic Pro 2 owner. I've already introduced myself in the 'Pilot's check in' Still not flown yet !

I passed my 107 on Monday today is Weds. Only this morning the IACRA uploaded my test results so i could complete my application online. I've also registered my drone with the FAA. So i now have all my paperwork done.

So now everything is done, my understanding is its going to take around 7 days for my certificate to be generated, and you're not allowed to fly until you get this certficate. I'd like to give this drone a go now. So OK i get that i'm probably not allowed to fly under Part 107 until my certificate is generated. But can i not just fly under a recreational pilot in the meantime ? I mean i doubt my footage will exactly be monetary given i'm a complete noob and just want to get the hang of flying, practice some recording of video, and just get a handle on what's what.

Advice welcome.

If the intent of your flight is purely recreational then YES you can fly now. Go out there and have fun. Be safe!

Congratulations on passing your part 107! There isn’t anything that would keep you from flying recreational, as long as you fly under the rules and regulations of a recreational flyer. Did you take a course before taking the exam? If so which one if you don’t mind me asking. I’m taking my part 107 soon and ended up purchasing an online course to help me mostly with sectionals. Have fun!

I'm not the original poster but I will answer some of your questions Kkyflyer129... I passed the test last Friday with out taking a course and just cramming for 2 days. With that said, I WOULD NOT RECOMEND ANYONE DO THAT!. I think the only reason I passed was from luck, 30% of the questions I blindly guessed on. You need to know how to read aeronautical sectional charts as well as understand the abbreviation given in weather forecasting.... here is the best advice I can give... watch this guy's video he explains exactly what you need to study and know:

I didn't take any courses. I spent maybe 5days in my spare time learning as much as i could via youtube videos. I learned how to read the sectional charts and METAR and TAF weather reports which i really had down. Then i went through all sample questions from here FAA Part 107 Drone Exam Practice Tests - Page 12 | 3DR to which i scored around 95% on my second attempt without any help of a voice over from a YT, to get me in the real world of what its like in the test. Out of the 126 out there, i scored something like 95% the night before the test, so thought i got this ! easy peasy. HOWEVER during the test, outside the METAR, TAF and sectional charts, a lot of questions I had not seen before and i think i probably ended up guessing at least 30% of them. I wasn't positive i was going to pass when i clicked finish. I thought i'm either going to be in the upper 60's or in the 70's. However i got 88% so i guess i did better than i thought. But it was more of a challenge that i thought it would be, once i was in the exam itself, and staring at a screen that was throwing me questions that i had never come across online before.

Thanks for running that down on how you prepped for the exam. That’s great. I wish you all the best on your commercial endeavors with sUAVs.

Do i need to take a basic test to fly recreational ? I've not researched that side, only what was needed to get a Part 107.

Welcome to the forum! :)

I was under the impression you could fly once you passed your 107 and got a Temporary Airman Certificate on IACRA. The certificate specifically says it is an interim certificate until one of longer duration (permanent) is issued or 120 days, unless some other issue is discovered in the application process.

The original poster has applied for his certificate this past Wednesday (yesterday) takes up to 7 days to get confirmation and your temporary certificate. I actually applied this past Monday and have not gotten mine yet. Once you get confirmation and the temporary certificate then you can fly your Drone commercially. In the mean time only for 'recreational' purposes....

Anyone know how long it takes to get your official cert? I've had my temporary one for a couple weeks now, and was just curious if it normally takes weeks, or months?

Suggest going back into IACRA to see if there is a Certificate Number listed yet. It just showed up for me; I got my temporary back early November. I have a remote mail location so don’t know if the hard copy is there yet.

Register your aircraft on the Commercial side of DroneZone not the Recreational side.

You're good to go flying even before you pass your Part 107 if you fly for recreational purposes only.

I'm going to have to correct what I said above...

As I said I took the test last Friday and applied on Monday and am still expecting an email from the FAA with a temporary certificate to fly commercially... well I decided to log into my account at the >> IACRA site and discovered something.. I already have what looks to me like a temporary certificate to fly ..... and it is good until I either get the real one or they say I can't have one..... or after 120 days...

Just as I thought...glad you're good to go.

Just a follow up to my follow up... I actually got the email from the FAA today saying I had the temporary certificate and could print it out and ect.... exactly 7 days after applying... the secret is the certificate was in my file ready to print at least 5 days....
