Welcome From Chicago the Windy City.
Practice, practice, and more practice. I fly VLOS only, and have a copilot at my side watching the drone at all times. Have strobes on the rear, so I have good Visual, of it at all times. Understanding RTH feature, how it works, having a Check list, understanding your battery. All a learning curve, takes time. Pick up on others experiences, good and Bad. Also, have pontoons, if flying over water continually in case it takes a dip, just for retrieval purposes. Not, for landing on water. You are getting a number of good suggestions from the community. Great bunch of pilots here, fly safe have fun.
