New to drone

Does that happen automatically? I though it had to be selected in the options.

The drone senses it needs extra thrust to hover so automatically goes into payload mode, it seems. There is also an option in the menu to manually activate/deactivate it.

I've used the guards just once, and only indoors, so don't know if you can put them on, then deactivate payload mode to go further.

Yes, auto but can be turned off afterwards. Happens with Any load above a critical weight.

Apparently the drone can detect how much power is needed to take off and if that is exceeded by even small increases (whatever that might be) in weight, the drone goes into Payload Mode automatically. I gather you can also activate that mode.
